Overview
Want to get your hands on Microsofts next operating system. Youll be able to sooner than you think. Microsoft has conformed that a public beta release of Windows 8 will arrive in February 2012.
The new operating system has yet to be publicly explored, but already its looking suitably swish, and just the sort of interface prepped for tablets.
Windows 8 will get its official release sometime in 2012, so February will be the first time the general public will get to play around with Microsofts colourful new OS, which should translate well to being navigated by touch.
Thanks to Nokia cosying up to Microsoft, weve been hearing lots about Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Well, Windows 8 will in some ways be very similar. Like the phone OS, the WIndows 8 experience is made up of tiles dedicated to a particular function, and customisable like a widget. Each tile is live, always presenting up to the minute data. A calendar tile for example will display your closest appointments.
Xbox fans will also note similarities with the latest Microsoft Xbox 360 dashboard, which has just gone live, making it easier to navigate by hand using Microsoft Kinect. It all points to a new operating system set to possibly deliver some of the best tablet experiences yet.

Windows 8 the next version of the Microsoft OS has had its details leaked on the web and theres a few juicy additions that may just have had their inspiration from a certain fruity competitor
The secrets of Windows 8 have been heavily guarded by Microsoft, but an internal presentation has made its way to the web and features details of a Windows app store, a render of a touchscreen PC that looks like a strange relative of the iMac and some tablet-focused features thrown in for god measure. Theres even some details on how Kinect could be baked in to the new OS.
The mockups in the presentation suggest that a Windows 8 app store will be similar to the current Zune Store and feature apps from Microsoft, as well as other software firms and device makers. It looks like theres also plenty of cloud computing support as the OS will allow apps and settings to follow you from device to device.
The presentation also reveals a render of a Windows 8 concept PC that looks like a hybrid iMac. And speaking of its major competitor, theres also a slide titled How Apple does it: a virtuous cycle, that examines the secret of Apples success and praises Apples user experience.
The new OS will also apparently log you in by using your computers webcam to recognise your face. That could suggest the Microsoft is planning to cram more Kinect-style smarts into Windows 8. Could gesture control be the secret weapon in its arsenal?
The full Windows 8 OS is reportedly planned for 2012.

Am I the only one that likes Windows 7 as it is? I really don't think Windows 8 will be all that much better. Just my opinion.
