What is SSH? (Secure Shell Connection)

When you insert an iPhone or iTouch into your computer it will be recognized by iTunes. It is not like a memory stick where you can view the files in Windows Explorer or Finder . Normally you will have no use for this, because you can access your iDevice's files through apps like iFile. However sometimes, e.g. when internal problems occur, you need to get in to your device via your computer, to remove a corrupt file.

How To SSH

Make Sure: Your iDevice is on, You have installed OpenSSH from Cydia and it is turned on, Your iDevice is connected to the internet.

Important: Your iDevice MUST be connected to the SAME wireless internet as your computer that you are using.

For Mac Users: download Cyberduck at [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
For Windows User: download Winscp at [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

These are both free bits of software.

Cyberduck

Here's a Cyberduck tutorial - i have a Mac so it's easier, but Windows users can follow this and use a bit of common sense.

1. Load up Cyberduck
2. Turn on your iDevice and OpenSSH
3. On Cyberduck, click 'open connection'.
4. At the drop down menu at the top, select 'SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)'.
5. Enter in your iDevice's IP address - this can be found by going to 'Settings --> Wifi --> Click on the blue arrow next to your internet connection'.
6. Username: the username for all iTouches and iPhones is 'root' - without the quote marks.
7. Password: the password for all iTouches and iPhones is 'alpine' - without the quote marks.
8. Make sure the 'Port' is set to 22.
9. Click the 'Add To Keychain' Box
10. Click Connect!

Once you're in you can look around for everything. However don't delete or change anything unless someone has confirmed that it's okay.

Happy SSHing
