well, you want a VPS, not a hosting company, as hosting companies give you pretty much no access, just uploading of files.

make sure you at lease have SFTP access.

also, make sure you have at lease 1GB ram with the server, and at lease 50GB bandwidth absolute minimum.

hard disk space isn't needed unless you have a huge world and plugins folder.

lastly, do not use too many plugins, as the server will lag more. keep it to a bare minimum for plugins that are 100% needed.
