When I didn't have gold i was respected same as others.

Because I helped the community.

I'm 22, not Gold, and would guess I contribute more than you(that is just a guess, correct me if you feel that's not true ;) )

Also, it creates a mild god complex to a lot of users. They feel they are "above" non gold members. However, I think for the majority of the community, this does not hold true, normally people are the same with or without ;)
