An Xbox advert has been criticised by advertising watchdog for using Playstation images to promote game.

The Advertising Standards Authority found that Square-Enix, the makers of the sci-fi role-playing game Final Fantasy XIII, had misled video-gamers by not using images from the Xbox 360 but from its rival, the Playstation 3 (PS3).
The ASA acted after one viewer complained that the sequence of images from the game released in March this year in the UK were from the Sony PS3, which he said had better quality images than the Microsoft-produced Xbox.Xbox currently has worldwide sales of more than 42 million (4 million in UK), compared to 38 million (3 million in UK) for the PS3.
ASA officials were sent both consoles and games by the makers and found that the PS3 screen quality was 'sharper' than the Xbox images and ordered the advertisement not to be shown again.
A spokesman for the ASA said the viewer's objections had been upheld, adding: "The ASA noted that the viewer, who saw the ad in HD, was concerned that the images from the PS3 version of the game were sharper than those on the XBOX 360.
"We tested the two games, on screens with an identical set up, and ran them alongside one another.
"We noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two - the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the XBOX 360.
"We considered that, because the ad promoted the game on the XBOX 360 platform, it should have featured footage derived from that console.
"Because it did not, and because we considered that the use of PS3 footage in the ad exaggerated the quality of the footage available on the XBOX 360, albeit marginally, we concluded the ad was misleading."
Square-Enix said the advert used images that did not contain 'actual gameplay', but had been taken from full motion video (FMV).
They admitted, however, that the images used were 'played back' on the PS3 as it 'allowed advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert'.
They said that there were 'hardware differences' between the two consoles which meant the software 'could be compressed onto one disc on the PS3', but three for the Xbox 360.
They said there was 'no substantive difference' in the output of the game, except in High Definition (HD), and said that most viewers would not notice the 'slight difference'.
Square-Enix told the ASA that they 'did not believe any average viewer, or indeed avid gamer, would perceive any difference in the output unless reviewing the materially forensically'.
