1 dollar for one month? I think you get that at the end when you're creating your account for XBL.

Is there any way when you're updating your account or adding LIVE onto your account to pay only 1 Pound? I've used it before in the past aswell.

Yea i think when your gold runs out the deal on the main screen should pop up. I'm not 100% confirmed.
