Does it cost anything at all? Or can you just gift it?

I'm definitely going to be gifting gold if someone gifts me or I buy it.

Gifting gold costs the same amount that it costs to purchase it.
I know that gold costs $5.97 for the U.S, but I'm not sure about the other payments for different areas.

When someone gifts you, they're buying it.
You need gold to gift someone also.
