What I don't fully understand is this:
If you were sent to Hell, you would basically be subjected to eternal despair and punishment for your sins.
Wouldn't Satan welcome the people that were like him? If you sinned and were just an overall horrible human being don't you think Satan would welcome you to Hell? Not punish you?
Religion just makes zero sense to me haha

That is the thing about religion for Catholicism especially, just like you said above and during the Northern and Italian Renaissance. The Catholic church did not have bibles for public or in mass since they had to be hand written at the time due to the fact that in Europe there were no mechanical typing machines. Basically you had to trust what the church said. So basically what the church did in order to get money is they sold something called indulgences to the public that stated if you pay the church x amount for the indulgence and sign it that you and your family were given immediate passage into heaven. Then a German monk named Martin Luther was against what was being taught by the church so he wrote the 95 theses and posted them on the Wittenburg State Church doors. But since I really don't feel like continuing his story so basically since the religions start it has taught practices that may not make any sense.

I completely agree with kittenz. It just doesn't make sense. If you could be bad on earth and do what you please, commit crimes, and then be welcome in hell were you can continue to be a bada** I feel like a lot of people would choose that but no hell is portrayed as eternal torture and suffer but who know's hell could possibly be paradise
