I am buying a new laptop for college and because I need one and I want it such that it has the capability to play games too, mostly only offline to pass the time nothing serious. So I'm in ireland and my budget is really no more than 1000 euro. I have two choice;
A) Asus N550 JK with Intel i7 4700 HQ with 8GB RAM. Nvidia GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR3
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
B) MSI GX60 with AMD A10 5750M with 8GB RAM. AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2GB GDDR5
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
So Asus has much better CPU with Intel i7 but the GPU is not as good as MSI's R9 M290X.
I have extensively researched online but still not entirely sure. People say the AMD CPU will bottleneck the R9 M290X. Whereas the i7 is very powerful but with a not as good GPU. I'm hoping some people could put in a valuable insight as to which would be much better.
Actually in general I will only game offline sparingly due to college.. Little AC4, maybe Watch Dogs, Skyrim..
Thanks.

Hi,
Many people will be saying "oh no buy a computer its a waste of money"... And also "oh build on yourself its cheaper", yeah it is but who builds there own laptop anyway?
I think you have found two good laptops, you have a dilemma here, the game watch dogs is CPU optimized so the obviously the i7 would come out on top there. Again skyrim is CPU intensive so again the i7 would come out on top.
But the MSI laptop has a 290X which is one of the best graphics cards from which AMD have made so that would be better to play games like Call of duty etc...
You need to choose your games really and then choose a laptop. There isn't really a easy way to choose. The i7 would be better for loading stuff for example word etc as it its a p[powerful little chip.
Choose wisely,
Adam

Easy choice, the Asus. The graphics in the MSI are slightly better but the i7 is a far superior CPU. It's better to sacrifice a little GPU power than a lot of CPU power. However, gaming on a laptop is a bad choice due to poor heat control. The laptop is going to heat up a lot, and pretty quickly too which can basically fry components. It's happened to me in the past. Obviously you're not going to build a laptop so I odn't know why the user above mentioned that? Of course, a desktop PC is much superior and it's better to build a full sized PC but for portability, you will obviosuly need a laptop. I wouldn't recommend playing very intense games, or for a very long period of time. Make sure to keep an eye on temparatures if you do.

Thank you, Adam and Sanctifum for both of your opinions, it is clear that a more powerful CPU is probably more important. My parents advised me to look a bit more so I am willing to put a bit more money into it, namely for the Alienware 14 which will be 1275 euro. It comes with i7 4710 HQ and Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M with 2GB GDDR5... For me this is much better than the other two... Overall that is.. And apparently they have a decent lifespan..

I read the word alienware and I already know it's overpriced. You should take a look at scans 3xs systems there quite good value for money. this is the same price as the alienware (899.99 pounds) but better: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Ok so alienware is a no go, don't see what it gives over others which are the same price. Lots of people in my situation are going towards Lenovo, but I have never had one, are they any good?. Looking at Lenovo Y510P or Y50 on the Lenovo official website. 1200 euro for Y50, unfortunately no price exists for the Y510P on the website, not sure why. Both are unbelievable with all the specs and I would presume the Y510P would be bit cheaper than the Y50.. Saw this online, it was 700 when it went up yesterday..
