If i have a motherboard without an HDMI port, but a graphics card with an HDMI port, does this matter. Does it just mean I plug into the HDMI on the graphics card and I can have a 1080p resolution or do I have to use VGA?

Plug the HDMI into your Graphics card. Always do this if you have a dedicated GPU as plugging the video cable into the motherboard will use the onboard graphics which will be waste of a Dedicated GPU.

As for the resolution that will depend on your monitor resolution.

If you have a dedicated card, always use the digital connections (HDMI, DVI, DP) from that rather than the motherboard.

If you have a graphics card installed in your PC, its more than likely using that for display output so yes plug your HDMI cable in to your graphics card.

You can set the resolution to 1080p in windows providing your monitor is 1080p capable.
