It's pretty easy to understand really, if you're told that modifying game code is "hacking" by someone else, why would you have any reason to think otherwise? Most people think of a hacker as someone who exploits technology or a program (or in this case, code in a game). The definition fits loosely with what they picture to be someone "hacking", so they go along with it. There's no reason for them to doubt what they were told as it make sense. It's kind of like something your mom told you as a kid that wasn't really true (bad kids don't get presents from Santa). You have no reason to think she's lying, so you believe her and tell your friends because it makes sense to you. That's how it gets passed on and why lots of people refer to it as "hacking".

Besides, we all know you need to subnet the subnet to be a real hacker *showoffbiceps1*

very simply just a modification, that or for-say you're playing a game and someone starts """hacking""" why is it so hard to say """modding"""? it seems to be the biggest struggle with anyone then you have the occasional kid who says, "I'm going to use yayada to hack you"

really now? :p hit them with some pentest questions

how do you open a reverse tcp, or even setup a exploit in general, that or just mess and ask them what their """hacking tool""" is written in and see their priceless response.

all in all these damn words are overused for the wrong reason.

What if they were to ask you if you knew about sql injections, using a RAT etc. would you come up with an answer before googling it? Haha.

Knowing the language a tool is coded in isn't proof of having the knowledge to use it now is it?

Disregarding your superiority complex, I do agree with your points in essence

At this point in the conversation I have to just smile and nod since you have completely lost me.

I do agree the annoyance of the term "hack" when they refer to a modification of a file.

To be fair the old term for a hacker was someone who 'Hacks' together code, so a programmer basically.

However many younger people don't know the difference between hacking (gaining access to data/accounts/whatever without permission or legal reasoning) and modding (Modifying files that you have full access too and using them to make either creative or host beneficial mods).

The only thing you violate when modding is a few codes of conduct, useualy it is not illegal but in the past there has been legal issues.
