Have you not seen the film 'Journey To The Center of the Earth' with Brendan Fraser?
It's based on true events, and the book that they reference a lot in the film was written by renowned explorers Lara Jones and Indiana Croft after their expedition to the center of the Earth.

Their best friend 'Mario' died down there after he tried to eat one of the giant mushrooms, apparently he had a bad reaction and started swelling up.

Scary stuff, but I'm convinced.
