I type it as mom, but pronounce it as mum. Maybe its a Canada thing

It is all to do with pronunciation and accent: both 'mum' and 'mom' (and indeed a third form, 'mam') all come from the same original word, 'mother.' ... In short: when Americans say 'mom' they are saying exactly the same word as the English when they say 'mum' in their own accent; they just happen to be spelt differently.

Im pretty sure in the US its mom and in the UK its mum
