So I got my first car at the end of October last year, a Ford Focus Zetec Climate (Mk2 2005), its a 1.6 5dr. I am 18 and wondering if after my insurance runs out whether or not to buy a new car? Money is obviously a struggle being a student but I would like a relatively fast car, would love a focus ST but insurance is a killer. Should I stick with my current Focus till it like dies or should I get a new car after my first year? Currently sitting on just over 91k miles on the clock, bought it for 1175 GBP and I have spent around 975 GBP on new parts/repairs. Just a little background info.

I think you should drive it till it dies or untill you get a repair bill for about half the price of the car. No need to upgrade now. Wait a little bit longer and you can get something nicer, and the longer you wait to cheaper your insurance will be, granted if you don't get into any accidents.

Not too sure about the car itself but its pretty low miles on it. The car im currently driving is a holden barina sri which i think in the UK is an opel barina or something similar. Anyway its a 1.8l it has just under 200k miles on it.

I think you should learnt to do minor repairs and services yourself so you can save some money to put it towards your next car.

Like you haven't even had the car long, yea you might be bored with it but at least it gets you around. If you get a faster car everything will cost more. You will spend more on insurance, more on fuel, more on general upkeep, assuming you use quality parts.

No need to upgrade. Gain yourself some NCB first then buy a fast car, insurance would be much cheaper. You would also be saving up during your usage of your current Fiesta, giving you more money to play with then it comes to the time of upgrading.

Okay thanks for all the input, and I do hope to try and learn more to do repairs by myself.

I'd build 1 years no claims, maybe 2 before you look at getting something else. I went from a 1.2 Clio to a Fiesta ST in 2014 when I was 18, and that was on a years no claims which lead to the insurance being pretty low

I'd recommend sticking it out for 1 year, get your no claims and then just keep running quotes on different cars until you find something you are certain on

Yeah I feel you, similar to a lot of my mates, one in particular who now has a Fiesta ST thats been Mapped to Stage 2 and has lots of other mods, he also has points on his license but since the NCB hes able to afford it.

Wait the 1 year so you have a 1 year no claims then tradeyour current car with another 500-1000 to buy a much better car.

I had a Citroen C2 1.4 for my first year, i got my first years NCB. I then sold the citroen for £500, and purchased a 1.4 litre Seat Ibiza Bocanegra (180 BHP). My insurance was £1250, with no black box.

0-60 7.2 seconds.

lovely little car
