A US boy has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother with a rifle he received as a Christmas present.

Deborah McVay, 46, died from a single gunshot wound to the back of her head in her Ohio home.

The unidentified 10-year-old was apparently arguing with his mother over chores, and was supposed to bring in firewood from the yard, KTLA reports.

The boy's 15-year-old sister witnessed the shooting and told Fox 8 News that the boy went to his room, loaded the .22 caliber rifle and shot their mum.

The boy then ran to a neighbour's home across the street and asked her to call an ambulance.

AOL News said police received an emergency phone call at around 6pm on Sunday night.

Chief Nathan Fritz of the Holmes County Sheriff's Office said the boy told the neighbour he needed the police because he had just shot his mum.

Police arrived at the Big Prairie home and found the mother-of-four in her living room, lying face down.

She was pronounced dead in the home.

Buelah Mae Mike, Deborah's mother and grandmother to the boy, told Fox 8 News she believed the shooting "had to be an accident".

"He was too young to have a gun," Mike said.

McVay's oldest son, Josh, said his mother was a "very loving lady" who ran her own health care company for the mentally challenged.

Josh said he forgives his little brother and wants him to come home as soon as possible.

The boy is being held in a juvenile detention centre and pleaded not guilty at a hearing on Monda
