Know very little about jailbreaking etc? Read on!

What is an iPod?

An iPod Touch and an iPhone are technically computers. They run a peared-down version of MAC OSX with a few linux run programs. they have a processor, graphics card, video card and an OS like a standard computer.

What is a Jailbreak?

On a normal computer, you can download almost anything from the internet; but Apple have made the iTouch and iPhone 'closed', so you are only able to download from the App Store, iTunes and attachments in Email. Jailbreaking your iDevice 'opens' it up, allowing you to download things from elsewhere. It also gives more functions through these extra programs, like themes and ringtones.

Is a Jailbreak Safe?

Hacking into an electronic device is never going to be 100% safe. But jailbreaking, as long as you use trusted programs, is around 99% safe. Even when it goes wrong, there are measures to put everything straight, like simply resetting. This does not give you any viruses, and if any were to be released onto the machine, the Mac OS takes care of that immediately with built in virus protection.

Why should i Jailbreak?

For iTouch Owners: User Interface Themes, Free Apps, System Tweaks (e.g. Volume Boost) and other programs.
For iPhone Owners: User Interface Themes, Free Apps, System Tweaks (Including ones which are not for iTouch - bluetooth file transfer for example), Free Calls and Texts in U.S., Ringtones and Others.

Is There Anything Bad About A Jailbreak?

Yes. Jailbreaking will generally slow your iDevice quite a bit. Also, apps may crash and you may need to reboot your iDevice quite frequently. Sometimes, but not often, a restore may be needed, but you can just jailbreak it again.

What Do I Need To Do It?

    A Windows or Mac Computer
The Latest Jailbreak Program (Depending on OS type)
An iPod Touch or iPhone (updated to latest firmware)
    USB iDevice Cable
    Hands

How do i Jailbreak then? I'm Ready!

Depending on which iPod or iPhone you have you need a certain program for your computer.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] is a seriously easy method to jailbreak. There is a windows program and a Mac program. Please follow other threads, but it's pretty self-explanatory to do.

Pwnagetool is a harder method of jailbreaking which is what i used when i first jailbroke. this can be found on the dev team's webpage: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] .
Pwnagetool is slightly different as it creates a custom firmware for you to restore your iDevice to. This requires you to put it in what's called DFU mode. Unfortunately, Pwnagetool is only for Mac users. A tutorial for how to jailbreak with Pwnagetool is here - [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] - (credit to MurdaFSM on Funky Space Monkey). REMEMBER THATS ONLY FOR MACS!

Note: Check out [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] for jailbreaking tips and resources.

Done?

After you have jailbroken, iTunes will recognize your device normally, however it has been 'edited from the inside'. If you have jailbroken with blackra1n, please follow the instructions in the other threads. If you have jailbroken with Pwnagetool, you're good to go.

Cydia

You will notice you have another app on your homepage called Cydia (and maybe others named Icy and Rock - but ignore them). Think of this as another kind of Appstore, but not made by Apple and containing lots of other stuff, instead of just apps. Also, cydia works with repositories, people create repositories and you add them in Cydia, gaining access to the programs, themes etc within them.

Cydia Store

Recently, Jay Freeman (a.k.a Saurik - the creator of Cydia) released the Cydia Store, which some big repositories release programs in that cost. these can be payed for with payplay but i suggest not using it - it's a ripoff!

Free Apps What is a Cracked App?

A Cracked App must have been originally bought by someone. It is then cracked manually - by rewriting it's code, or automatically by other programs, e.g xcrack. A Cracked App can then be distributed everywhere, without needing an iTunes password or money to pay for it.
A company called Hackulo.us have released a program to get you free apps. However, there's some work to do. An iDevice contains frameworks - think of them as a set of rules in a way. One of them is called MobileInstallation. This framework is in charge of all app installations. It detects whether the App is legal - as in purchased legally, or downloaded from the internet. This framework needs to be patched in order to install cracked apps. The repository cydia.hackulo.us includes something called AppSync - install the one that includes your firmware.

Note: repositories can be added via MANAGE --> SOURCES --> EDIT --> ADD.

After installing this, you need to install somnething called install0us, also found in the hackulo.us repository. This is a web browser for browsing cracked apps and is very easy to use, no tutorial needed here.

Themes

Themes are made by very many repositories and are controlled by something called Winterboard. Winterboard is automatically located on cydia and will become an icon on your home screen, You then download themes and select them in Winterboard. This will then respring your ipod - like a refresh, and you have your theme.

Everything Else

There are too many cool apps and tweaks on cydia to talk about, just look and find them. Read the description to se if you like it and how to activate it, and off you go.

Other Repositories

A lot of Repositories come in cydia automatically, but two i recommend installing are

cydia.hackulo.us
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] - contains a lot of cydia store apps which are free

check out [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] and [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] for news on jailbreaking and cydia. They may also help with any problems.

WARNING

iTouch 3g - cannot be fully jailbroken at the moment, please do not try. It is at the tethered stage - where every time you turn it off, you have to jailbreak again.

iPhones - if you wish to unlock your iphone 1g, 2g, 3g or 3gs you need to use pwnagetool so you don't update the baseband (please check before you do anything that you can definitely unlock). You can then unlock these in cydia using something called unltrasn0w - instructions inside.

Anything else - pm me
Happy Jailbreaking
