I have noticed from the responses that the main drill is to perform a "Lockdown".

Personally I don't see the rationale behind that. See my comments below, but first.

I would like to say I do not mean any offense by any of my comments about any of the school shootings. They are a huge tragedy and I hope that none of you have to go through any of it.

That being said, here are my comments.

Most schools that I have heard about, including the ones listed by our members and Sandybrook Elementary have a "Lockdown" policy (Early Reports). The problem is that at Sandybrook, it worked and 20 kids were gunned down without mercy by a coward. I have a HUGE problem with grouping people (students) in a confined area, like fish in a barrel, and make them easy targets. In my opinion I believe the best course of action for students is to GTFO of the area. If you look at the incidents and studies you will see that with the exception of a few most of the shootings have taken place in a very close, confined space.

The more space that you put between you and the shooter, the better off you are. I don't want you to go out there and start busting windows during a drill, but I want you to think about avenues of escape. I understand why school administrations want to keep students together (for control), but there needs to be a better common sense approach to this.

Trained and Untrained
Studies have shown that most of the perpetrators are not trained. By trained I mean, law enforcement, military or combat/tactical shooting training. Most are just people with a problem.

Targets VS. Threats
Trained individuals are conditioned to search for and engage threats. Untrained people just look for targets, the easier the better, to eliminate.

The reason for those comments are to describe what is going on when one of these people go off. Most are shown to have what is known as "Target Fixation", which is when a person becomes so obsessed on a specific task that they tend to ignore anything that is going on around them. Trained individuals will always "hunt for a threat" and not just go off randomly. The fact that most are this way (untrained) will increase your chances of survival if you try to escape. Most of these perpetrators are just looking for easy targets. If you stay moving and exit the area you will have a better chance of survival.

Below is a protocol that I read about on a military forum that I frequent. I believe that it is a good common sense approach.
1. Evade and escape away from the shooter and the incident site.
2. If you can't E&E, barricade yourself away from the shooter.
3. If you can't evade or barricade, attack the shooter with everything you got: Fists, feet, chairs, textbooks, computers. Don't restrain them, STOP THEM HARD. Mob the shooter and beat him down.

In light of what has happened. I suggest talking to your parents, friends and administration about the pros and cons of just "Sitting in a classroom" if someone starts shooting.

Yes, most of my teachers went through training.

Yeah i don't think that you would risk your life , you wouldnt know if you would or not until your in that situation .




Like most people are saying , most school just do the lockdown drill wich doesnt do much , my school does this and only this to prepare for something like a school shooting , wich isn't enough !

I personally agree with the majority of people, I don't believe that lockdown drills are very effective. In high school and college, the teachers/professors would group everybody into a part of the room which is not visible from any windows. They then lock the door, which is the signal that everybody goes silent for. I personally don't like this for the "fish in a barrel" reason as well. If there is a window leading to the outside of the classroom, I would jump out of it, regardless of the fall. It's possible that a few will sustain leg/arm injuries from the fall, but I believe it's much better than locking yourselves in a room. Once we're outside, we would be safely directed towards actual shelter.

I am unsure as to whether my college has a plan for this scenario, I would think not considering I am from the UK and we as a country have not experienced this sort of problem.

Plan of action? Disarm, and perhaps kill the shooter(s) or die trying. I will probably get thumbs down simply for saying that, but I am serious. To the immature trolls, don't judge without knowing...

No I have not considered what I would do if this were to happen as I would assume this is highly unlikely to happen where I live. As I have stated in the previous answer, I would do what I could to end the situation.

I highly doubt that this has happened.

5. Does your school conduct drills of any type?
Only fire drills, nothing to this severity.

6. Have you and your family discussed a plan if something like this happens?
No as this sort of thing doesn't happen in the UK.

-No. We do not. My school surprisingly hasn't come up with anything yet. I am shocked.

-My first instinct would be to run in the opposite direction and out of his line of site. Honestly though, I would probably freeze up. In that case, I have no idea what I would do.

-I have talked about it with my friends. Like what if it happened to our school. And we talked about it in History class.

-My school district is against offering training to staff. They think that it is ridiculous for a teacher to be able to have a gun on school grounds. Considering it is against the law and a teacher could flip to, I agree with them. We talked about teachers being able to have a concealed weapon at school in History class, and my teacher said that it would sure make kids pay more attention knowing that the teacher has a gun.

-Just fire and earthquake drills. And occasionally, a disaster drill.

-No we have not, but I am going to bring up some ideas to them after reading this.

We've done some lock down drills but I'm pretty sure that Is when they bring In dogs for drug searches.

I'd get out of the way of the shooter and get out of the place.

I've thought about sometimes, haven't really made a plan for It.

Not that I know of.

We have fire drills, tornado drills and lockdown drills but like I said I'm pretty sure during the lock down drill Is when they bring in the dogs for drug searches.

No.

I'm pretty sure If anything like this ever happened at our school It wouldn't be good. I mean we don't even have cops/security hardly at our school.

  • My school currently conducts lockdown drills. We all pile to one corner of the room, lock the door, and shut off the lights. Also, when we are not doing a lockdown, the teachers are required to lock the door (while he / she is teaching the class.)

  • We are required to stay in that corner (of course being quiet the entire time) until a police man / woman / SWAT team comes to tell us we're safe.

  • During school we are required to take the steps above to ensure our safety.

  • At a public place, I think I would try to hide behind stacks of food that are on the shelves by tearing out the food behind the first few rows and hiding there (literally hiding behind the food - not talking... If I'm somewhere else, I think I would try to run and hide throughout the place avoiding the gunman / woman until I can safely run out of the building...

  • I think it would take a very long time for me to get over the fact that somebody came into my school - a place supposed to be extremely safe - and killed innocent people.

Edit to add: By training I do not mean firearms training to teachers and staff, I mean training in how to deal with the situation.

  • I am not aware of any training these teachers have had for these types of situations... not even gun training.

  • All we do it tornado drills, fire drills, and lockdowns.

  • No we have not. Although we probably should. People feel like it could never happen to their school.

Anybody reading this, don't assume that it could never happen to your school. There are some very crazy people out there that can do anything they set their "mind" to.

Everyone in my school has guns. (Of course not the students.)
But the staff are all fully loaded. The school is always on lock down and we are fully safe behind the strong steel doors and bullet proof windows. They have nerve to try and mess with us.

Nope.

More then likely just to obey whatever my teacher say. Nothing I can really do.

Nope.

Don't consider this trolling, because it's not, but I think principals should be strapped.
I really doubt that a principal would snap and murder the whole school, but if this ever happened and a principal had a handgun or shotgun, the shootings at sandy hook or columbine wouldn't have happened.
