sorry im confused right now..you said he doesnt need 16gb ram as speed and capacity do not matter then you said quote on quote "I never said you shouldn't take speed/capacity in to consideration" ...any how OP isnt going to have 4gb of ram as thats pointless as theyll have to upgrade later anyway...so in all fairness capacity is a big factor and alongside the factor of speed im not sure how speed affects DDR4 in comparison to DDR3 but ive heard speed is quite a big factor with DDR4 (maybe just for ryzen but still)

Correct, OP does not need 16GB RAM. The only requirement for an i5-8400 is that he use DDR4 288-pin. What don't you understand about that? OP thinks 16GB is some sort of minimum requirement with an i5-8400, which is not true, because there are no minimum requirements on speed or capacity.
dude are you trolling right now? DDR4 still has a capacity you cant just say ahh get DDR4...makes literally no sense as it could mean absolutely anything (4gb,8gb,16gb,32gb etc) it still has a capacity of how many GB it has...in practicality for gaming 16gb is the sweet spot if you dont want to have to upgrade later.

alright ive realised where the communication error is here which i can breach..I myself am talking about what a good amount of ram is for gaming (which OP has listed) YOU are speaking about minimum DDR4 ram for having a general build which yes correct has no minimum ....so this has went off topic but i stand my ground in saying 16gb is a good amount of ram to have for gaming and yes think of going for ryzen and upgrading the gpu as the 8400 and 1050ti are two extremes...try to even it out.

Yes. Exactly. RAM speed or capacity does not matter. You could run a system with 4GB 2133MHz or 16GB 3000MHz. Not having 16GB won't cause a system not to work. OP seems to think there is some sort of minimum requirement, which there is not.
Pip-Boy wrote then you said quote on quote "I never said you shouldn't take speed/capacity in to consideration" ..
Yup. If you're building a system, you should obviously still take speed and capacity in to consideration, that does not however mean that 16GB is necessary, or that there is any sort of minimum requirement.
Pip-Boy wrote any how OP isnt going to have 4gb of ram as thats pointless as theyll have to upgrade later anyway...so in all fairness capacity is a big factor and alongside the factor of speed
Correct, not many people will run 4GB RAM these days. Again though, doesn't mean you can't. OP is under the impression an i5-8400 requires 16GB RAM, it does not, it could run with 4GB.

I can say that DDR4 is the only requirement with an i5-8400, and I did, because it's true. Any DDR4 288-pin RAM will work with an i5-8400, regardless of speed or capacity. Whether it's 4GB 2133MHz or 64GB 3600MHz.

Not at current pricing. With a £650 budget, 8GB would likely make more sense as more money could be spent elsewhere and it's easy enough to add another 8GB RAM in the future.

"and 16gb will be beneficial as you wont have to upgrade down the line and is sufficient for nearly every task at hand" i never said it was a minimum requirement for having that build...i said it was BENEFICIAL
i think you have misread what i have posted but anyhow aside from arguing as this is getting pointless lets just come to a resolution for OP as i doubt he wishes to see us talking shit

You said that 16GB was the "sweet spot". I think you meant recommended. 8GB RAM however is perfectly adequate and at current pricing, 8GB RAM is likely a better fit for a £650 system. Obviously 16GB is beneficial, but if it means having to drop from a 1060 to a 1050Ti, you're better getting 8GB RAM instead and adding more RAM later since it's one of the easiest upgrades. A GPU upgrade is more hassle than adding an extra stick of RAM.

its adequate but it wont last long as there are heavy demanding games out there that will eat it easily....and a gpu upgrade is just as easy to upgrade as anything else (IMHO) plus there are other ways to save money such as evening out the GPU/CPU

It will last as long as OP wants it to. 8GB is perfectly sufficient. 4GB was adequate until not that long ago. It will be quite a while before 16GB is the minimum capacity people recommend, and we'll probably be using DDR5 by then. How much RAM a game uses will depend on GPU as well. A 3GB GTX 1060 will use more system RAM than a 6GB 1060.

I'm not saying a GPU upgrade is necessarily hard. However, adding another stick of RAM is much cheaper than buying a whole new GPU, it's also much easier. Same goes for CPU, so actually it makes more sense to get less RAM with a better CPU+GPU, rather than vice versa.

im just going to lay down these bullet points just in case there was any miscommunication
16gb isnt required for a minimum for any build but IS beneficial if you want to game
8gb will be good for now but youll have to upgrade further down the line
try to reduce the cpu and perhaps increase your gpu so its more even as currently a i5 8400 and a 1050ti are strong and weak....it wont go well.
if you can (as 13 said) try go for a ryzen build as it utilizes the bandwidth of the ddr4 ram better.
