Marvel Rivals Announces Plans for Monetization

3.3
Marvel Rivals will launch in two days. The free-to-play hero shooter from NetEase will have a monetization element, and the developers revealed today what that looks like.

First, they stress that they will only charge for cosmetics, which provide visual changes and updates. There will be no option to buy stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements in the game. That means that when more heroes are announced, you won't have to pay for them.

There will be two currencies available in-game: Lattice and Unit. Lattice, the gold currency, is Marvel Rivals' premium currency obtained by purchasing it outright. Units, the blue currency, can be exchanged at a 1:1 ratio using Lattice. They can also be earned for free through the Battle Pass, Achievements, and other Events. The standard price for 100 Lattice is $0.99. For $99.99, you'll obtain 11,680 Lattice.

Cosmetics are the only paid content available in Marvel Rivals. Most of these items will be sold as a bundle through the in-game store. Most skins inside a bundle can be purchased individually, but buying the bundle comes at a discount. A standard bundle will contain five items: a costume, MVP animation, emote, spray, and nameplate.

There will be three levels of bundles, complete with their pricing structure:

Standard Epic-Quality Bundle: 1,600 Units (Standard value: 2,200 Units, -28% discount)
Standard Epic-Quality MCU Bundle: 1,800 Units (Standard value: 2,400 Units, -25% discount)
Standard Legendary-Quality Bundle: 2,400 Units (Standard value: 3,300 Units, -28% discount)

A Battle Pass for Marvel Rivals contains cosmetic items on par with those sold in bundles. A developer blog mentions that they will be "exquisite and dazzling," so expect these to be a little better quality than the standard items.

Here's what to expect from the Season 0 Battle Pass:
Luxury Battle Pass: 490 Lattices (contains items with a total value of 8,000 Units)
Five costumes and related cosmetics.
After purchase, you will redeem items by earning Chrono Tokens (Battle Pass tokens) through tasks and events.

The Free Battle Pass for Season 0 will contain one epic-quality costume and a series of other items.

Once you purchase a Luxury Battle Pass, players can still redeem its rewards in later seasons. With Season 0 being shorter than future planned seasons, the Luxury Battle Price is cheaper than it otherwise would be.

Marvel Rivals developers also promise that completing achievements and events will reward players with free cosmetic items, such as costumes. You will also obtain free Units that will allow you purchase paid cosmetics.
