Croc Remaster Release Date Delayed

4.3
The upcoming remaster of the classic PlayStation platformer Croc: Legend of the Gobbos has been delayed from its initial December date to the first quarter of 2025 following an announcement from the developer. There is currently no specific date as to when the Croc remaster might hit shelves, but it has been confirmed as a multiplatform launch across all the main current-generation systems and PC.

While it may not be a household name to many nowadays, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was a classic platformer from the 1990s that offered an alternative to the likes of Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot. It launched on the original PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and PC in 1997 and takes on a similar structure to that of Spyro, as the titular crocodile is tasked with rescuing furry critters called Gobbos in a battle against the villain, Baron Dante.

Originally, the Croc remaster was slated for a December 2024 release for all available platforms, but developer Argonaut Games issued a statement on Twitter confirming the game's delay to Q1 2025. The team did not specify any reasons for the delay aside from quality assurance, stating that they hoped to deliver the best experience possible at launch and expressing regret for missing out on the holiday season release window.

The game's original reveal may have come as something of a surprise to a lot of gamers given the series' niche status, but Croc proved to have an audience in its heyday, even spawning a sequel two years later. Croc was known at the time for borrowing elements from other major franchises, such as movement mechanics from the classic Tomb Raider games and a focus on collectibles like the Banjo-Kazooie franchise.

In any case, retro re-releases in the modern era, especially for platformers, have proven to be a popular trend in the last decade as a lot of fan-favorite titles have seen ports, remasters, and full-on remakes. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy brought back another iconic PlayStation franchise with a fresh coat of paint and an iconic SpongeBob Squarepants game even got a full remaster, both of which showed great success with sales.

It remains to be seen at the moment when Croc: Legend of the Gobbos might finally see the light of day on modern platforms, as promised, but at the very least, fans can rest assured that it is still on the way soon. Meanwhile, there are plenty of other platformers out there to enjoy and more to come, as even the indie game Yooka-Laylee is set to get the remaster treatment soon.
