As it turns out, our guess was right, as Inis Games seems intent on publishing the game on modern consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch). While no announcement has been made, the studio has relayed a message via a new survey seeking feedback.
In the survey, the studio states, "We know you’re eagerly awaiting a statement from us, and we deeply appreciate your patience. Our collaboration with YS NET has been very fruitful, but we are carefully reviewing all details. This process takes time, and we thank you for your understanding."
The first question asks gamers on which platform they want to see Shenmue 3, with the choices being PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Apple Mac. Inis Games also asks what graphics and performance improvements gamers would like to see for the action-adventure game.
While no official announcement has been made, I wouldn't be surprised if Inis Games is already developing a current-gen version of Shenmue 3 right now, and the survey is just to gauge interest more than anything else.
If you're not familiar with the game or franchise, Shenmue 3 was released in 2019 on the PS4 and PC. It is the direct sequel to Yu Suzukui's Shenmue franchise, which debuted on the SEGA Dreamcast back in 1999. It's often cited as the first true open-world game and, at the time, was the most expensive video game developed, with its development and marketing budget estimated to be $47 to $70 million.
While Shenmue 3 was released five years ago, it didn't exactly give a closure to the franchise, and it wouldn't surprise me if after releasing the port to more modern consoles, a new chapter is announced as well.
