Xbox System Link actually works on Series X/S, too
If you ever used to take your Xbox consoles around to your friend’s house for some old-school Halo LAN sessions in days gone by, you’ll know all about the Xbox System Link.
The feature, which is innate to all Xbox consoles, allows players to connect multiple consoles together for offline multiplayer games. This was most commonly used for Halo games on the Xbox and Xbox 360 – but a new discovery has proved the feature is still alive and well on the Xbox Series family of hardware, too.
Modern Vintage Gamer’s System Link video, embedded above, shows an original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series S working with the backwards compatible title Crimson Skies, with all four generations running the game in tandem thanks to the Xbox System Link.
Though realistically we don’t expect many people to network their original fat Xbox with an Xbox Series X to play Crimson Skies or similar games, it’s a credit to Microsoft that the hardware still has this handy feature enabled on it.
This is just another example of the Xbox team’s commitment to legacy content. We already know that the Xbox Series X adds HDR to backwards compatible games, and that four generations of games are supported on the new hardware generation.
Microsoft’s message with Xbox Series X has always been one where backwards compatibility played a key role, and new little discoveries like this prove that’s a real philosophy for the company, and not just lip service.
