God of War: Ragnarok Will Feature Expanded Shield Options

3.8
During the recent PlayStation Showcase event, fans received their first substantial look at God of War Ragnarok. While a number of discernable details were revealed during the trailer, there are still plenty of surprises left in store for God of War Ragnarok. Although, the director of the game recently expounded upon a certain gameplay element featured in God of War that will be more fleshed out in God of War Ragnarok.

God of War shook up the series' formula in various different ways. The tone of the game was much more somber and mature, the Blades of Chaos took an initial backseat to the Leviathan Axe, and instead of focusing on Kratos maliciously slaying every major Greek god in his path, the story chose to center on the relationship between him and his son, Atreus. Though, of the new mechanics added to the game, the shield was one that didn't have as much significance comparatively.

In a recent interview with YouTuber Jon Ford that featured both Cory Barlog and Eric Williams, the director of God of War Ragnarok, Williams mentions that there will be a variety of different shields, which will have differing defensive abilities. In the previous entry, both weapons and armor were intentionally designed to have customizable aspects in order to suit any given user's style of play, but the shield was exempt from that.

It makes sense for their to be multiple shield varieties for players to choose from. Considering how many new combat mechanics were introduced in the previous game, all of which involved skill trees and customizable runes, this leaves a lot of potential for the shield to be given the same treatment. A lot was revealed during the PlayStation Showcase God of War Ragnarok trailer, but gameplay details like this are important to consider also.

As is typical with most upcoming games, it's important to keep the bulk of new content a secret. That way, it leaves player with a sense of surprise while playing the finished product. However, at the end of the day, God of War fan theories will always exist, given the unsatiable curiosity of most fans to know what comes next.

It will be interesting to see what else the developers have in store for God of War Ragnarok. Other gameplay details were revealed in a blog post following the release of the trailer, including the fact that players will be able to travel to all 9 realms in God of War Ragnarok. While this may be the last God of War game to take place in Norse mythology, it seems like the game is definitely expanding upon what came before it.

God of War: Ragnarok is set to release on PS4 and PS5 in 2022.
