God of War Fullscreen Mode Unlikely, Says Dev

3.3
When God of War had a reboot back in 2018, it was almost inevitable that it would go down well in the PC fan base when that came out this year. In fact it was pretty much the right move for the game. With the franchise being one of the best third-person action adventures of all time, the recent entry in the series has breathed new life into Kratos and his surrounding exploits. With the PC port still doing well on Steam, fans have been asking for one particular mode, but, sadly, it doesn't look like that will come to fruition.

In a recent post on the Steam community, one of the developers, who goes by the handle Matt_sms, responsible for God of War has made it clear that, despite the community asking for it, the studio is not likely to add a true fullscreen mode to the game. As it stands, players can put it into "borderless fullscreen" but, in an effort to be more transparent with fans, the post says that Santa Monica Studio has "no plans" to include "Exclusive Fullscreen."

There are a number of reasons as to why the developer won't be adding it, and most of it relates to visual acuity and optimization. In this instance, Matt_sms states that the current borderless fullscreen mode is suited for things like VSync and G-Sync, which reduces screen tearing during play, as well as for upscaling technologies, including Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling or DLSS, and AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR. On top of that, the post says that the team will be working to make improvements to the current fullscreen mode that's in the game.

While some may be a little disappointed by this, most in the comments below the post seemed understanding, and it's unlikely to hurt the already pretty stellar reputation of the game, especially the PC port. God of War has done exceptionally well on Steam, with a current rating, at the time of writing of, "Overwhelmingly Positive." In general, it's unlikely that most players will be put off by the news that exclusive fullscreen is not going to be implemented.

As for the future of the series, many are eagerly anticipating the arrival of God of War: Ragnarok which is due out sometime this year. Currently, it's only scheduled to be launched on PS4 and PS5, but given the huge success of the PC port of this installment, there's every reason to believe that Steam will get its own version as well.

God of War is available on PC and PS4.
