Street Fighter 6 Input Delay Reduction Feature Proven To Be Effective

3.2
Street Fighter 6's second closed beta test ended a few days ago, but the three-day window was more than enough time for players to tinker around with the game and gather some interesting findings, such as the exact effect of the newly touted 'Input Delay Reduction' feature on consoles.

Input delay has long been a contentious issue in fighting games. It's often a default setting in TVs to increase picture quality, and games themselves sometimes have their own input lag as the extra time can help ensure everything runs smoothly. But, as you can imagine, it can be very frustrating for competitive fighting game players who need to be as precise as possible with their inputs, as just one frame of difference, especially in high-level play, can result in a move or hitting or missing.

Consoles have been at a disadvantage with PC in this regard for a while, but Street Fighter 6 looks to aid that with this new feature. By going to the game's settings and heading to Graphics, then Basic Graphic Settings, you should find the option to add this. Though, that was in the beta and is therefore subject to change.

As reported by Event Hubs, a user by the name of Kimagre Gaming tested out the effect of this IDR (Input Delay Reduction) feature, specifically on PlayStation 5. They had some sort of frame tracker running with the game, which you can see in action here. As seen in the graph above, Kimagre found that with the IDR on, there was a noticeable difference in input delay, especially in the higher resolutions.

When in 1080p, the difference was essentially negligible, with the mode input delay time only being about 0.20 frames less (one three-hundredth of a second). In 1440p and 4K, however, the difference was much more noticeable. With the IDR on, these two resolutions got an approximate 1.5 frame improvement in input delay. That's about a fortieth of a second, which doesn't sound like much but can make all the difference in a tournament match.

It's currently unclear if this feature will be just as effective or necessary for Xbox players, as it hasn't been tested there quite yet. But, so far, it seems console gamers will get an option for more responsive gameplay. This is very beneficial for the competitive scene, as tournaments often use consoles, given that they're much cheaper than high-end PCs.

Street Fighter 6 will release on June 2, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
