The Maelstrom update on the way to Sail Forth

Sail Forth is a single-player adventure game where you sail across an ocean in search of secrets to the past while you make friends and fight off enemies. Described by one Steam review as “the love child of [The Legend of Zelda] Wind Waker’s sailing and Animal Crossing’s dialogue”, Sail Forth has a new update on the way titled the Maelstrom update.

There is a lot of beauty woven into the game’s variety of biomes, atmosphere and dynamic day-night weather system. In between the game’s variety of encounters with sea monsters, pirates, and other enemies, there’s lots to enjoy. During my time with the game, I found a calm serenity while drifting toward the game’s horizon - akin to Journey.

David Evans, the game’s sole developer, let me know that this connection wasn’t a stretch and that Journey was a big inspiration for the game.

“The main thing that I want players to experience is a chill time, I try to make the combat contrast those chill moments.”

Evans began working on the game in hopes to create sailing mechanics that felt realistic and satisfying—something he hadn’t found in other video games. With a sailor as a father, Evans hoped to make a game that his dad would find satisfying.

Sail Forth is available on the Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox One and the Xbox Series X|S for $19.99. The Maelstrom update along with a free update will be coming to the game later this year.
