Bethesda’s Todd Howard isn’t interested in a Morrowind remaster
Plenty of Elder Scrolls fans have asked for a Morrowind remaster in recent years, but unfortunately, Bethesda’s Todd Howard isn’t very interested in the idea.
Speaking with The Guardian, Howard seems content with The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind being backward compatible on Xbox One, and isn’t interested in anything more.
“I’m really happy that Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and others are making it easier for people to play [older games] as they were played at the time,” he said. “I actually prefer that over remasters. I’d rather you play Morrowind the way it was … I think the age is part of its identity.
“For something like Morrowind, my personal preference is not to remaster it.”
He has a point, honestly, as it seems everything is receiving a remaster these days. I’m exaggerating of course, not everything has been or is getting a remaster, but there are plenty available and more on the way. We get that.
However, a spruced up Morrowind for PC and current-gen consoles would be welcome for many, and I am in that camp.
Howard also makes another good point: Morrowind’s age is “part of its identity.” Yes, its graphics are dated, but so are the graphics of many other beloved titles still being played today. Play the game for 30 minutes on PC and you will no longer notice the graphics. Plus, there are mods out there which not only overhaul the graphics, but add additional content. Give it a try on PC, and you will see.
But, Skyrim was remastered for PS4 and Xbox One, right? Yes, but as Howard stated, the release was “visually close” enough to the original. Comparatively, remastering Morrowind – one could assume – would be a massive undertaking. Plus, Bethesda has bigger fish to fry at the moment: Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls 5, and Starfield are all in the works.
