I think the animals combined with the huge sprawling beautiful open world is going to give this game some added replayability. I plan to spend a lot of time hunting and just enjoying the wildlife around me in Red Dead Redemption.

Im starting a list to try and confirm every animal thats in the game with sources linked for ease of access. I'm aware of the lists already out there (ala gamespot forums, read dead wiki, etc) but from what I've seen none really have sources for quick access. That's why I decided to make this one. Plus it might help draw some more members to the best RDR forums around.

Red Dead Redemption is going to have approximately 40 different animals that inhabit the open world.

All of which can be hunted and killed. Many of these animals can be skinned, and have their pelts among other things such as meat, feathers, claws, teeth, and tusks sold to merchants. Earn even more cash by selling animal parts to shops further away from an animals native territory. Skinning the animals, including horses, puts John into a view where you see him (only) not the animal but you do have blood splashes on screen and you hear the squishy sound effects of the knife skinning the game. Plus when done it leaves their skinless carcass on the ground. Which can be seen here.

Besides hunting for profit there are Hunting Challenges, which can be done both as part of the single player experience and in multiplayer Free Roam sessions. Receive rewards for hunting down and killing set amounts of the most dangerous animals.

The game is also suppose to feature intricate predator and prey relationships inside a full ecosystem. A very well written article that goes into detail about this can be read here.

Basically, you can expect to see predators like Coyotes, Wolves, Cougars etc hunting and killing common prey like Jackrabbits while riding through the countryside. Sometimes they'll skip the critter and come straight for you though. You'll often have to fend off against these dangerous predators who are looking to make a meal out of you and your horse.

This article mentions that the game might go into even more detail with this system.

Quote:
Apparently we can expect some seriously sophisticated behavior in the animals of Redemption, even in excess of their modern human counterparts in GTA. One scenario that was mentioned described possible interaction with wolves; should a lone wolf encounter an armed human on horseback then that animal will react defensively, not daring to advance into an unwinnable scuffle. However should one be foolish or unlucky enough to find oneself stranded without horse or gun in the middle of nowhere then it wont take that wolf long to posse up and have the whole family feasting on an unfortunate corpse.

The Map shows us that there will be specific locations for each animal. We already knew some animals would only be in one of the three zones based on that zones habitat. For example: West Elizabeth is the northern-most region, featuring snow-capped mountains, forests, and plains so you can expect to see Grizzly Bears, Elk, Cougars, and Bison as common game there. New Austin is mainly grassy plains and prairie so you can expect to see tons of pesky Coyotes, Wolves, Wild Horses (mustangs), and your fair share of Cattle there. Lastly, Nuevo Paraiso is in Mexico and is the southern-most region, featuring dry, dusty deserts so you can expect to see Armadillo, Cougars, Rattlesnakes, Jackrabbits, and other desert dwellers there.

Another cool feature in the game is the way bodies of water play into the wildlife. The closer you get to larger masses of water, the more green and damp the environment. The more inland you go, the more arid everything becomes, and so forth. This equally effects what animals you're likely to encounter.

This Article talks about how the game's full day and night cycle will change what animals you come across. Expect to see Bats, Owls, Raccoons, and Wolves among other nocturnal animals out prowling around during nightfall more so then during the day.

Quote:
If you stay in one place and wait for night to fall, the whole picture changes too. Small campfires spring up around the wilderness, providing refuge for all manner of ne'er-do-wells and simple travellers, and the wildlife changes, with nocturnal creatures coming out to play. The same thing is true of the weather: violent thunderstorms can break out, changing the complexion of the land and the behaviour of pretty much everything living off it.

Ill try to confirm every animal from the list as we go via screenshot, video footage, or article and Ill add any new or unlisted animals if new info is released.

You're welcome to help me by finding and posting new sources or just discuss as we wait for this epic game to near closer.

_______________________________________________________________

~ Horses ~
A horse is a horse, of course, of course and you can see one in just about every video/screenshot of the game. They are the most common animal in the game and Marston's main source of transportation. You'll be able to tame wild horses (or kill and skin them) and there will be plenty of different breeds, upgrading stamina and speed with the better breeds you tame. Here's a few Screenshots. 1. 2. 3.

~ Burro/Donkey/Mule~
You can see a Burro/Donkey a couple times in the Gameplay Video Series: Introduction video. This Video screenshot also confirms it as your starting out mount in Multiplayer Free Roam.

~ Cattle (Cows/Bulls) ~
( Cows - 1:30 in Life in the West ) & ( Bulls - Introduction video 2:08 ) Cattle herding will be one activity to do in the game and you will be able to unlock a Bull mount in multiplayer free roam.

~ Bison ~
The American Buffalo also known as the Bison can be seen in theGameplay Series: Life in the West Video 1: 44 and the Gameplay Series: Introduction Video 0:41 are just a few scenes showing off Bison (aka Buffalo) herds.
The Great Plains region in West Elizabeth (screenshot)is where you'll see the majority if not the exclusively of all the Buffalo in Red Dead Redemption.
You can unlock a buffalo mount in multiplayer, much like you can the Bull Mount.

~ Elk/Caribou ~
Elk can be seen only a couple times in the Gameplay Series Videos. Once in the Life in the West Video at 1:48 again in The Woman trailer towards the middle. Also in this screenshot and this new screenshot. Caribou have yet to be confirmed or denied as a potential animal in the game.

~ White-Tail Deer/Mule Deer ~
Deer can be seen in many of the various RDR videos released so far, click here.

~ Grizzly Bears ~
Hanging out in the Tall Trees region of West Elizabeth the Grizzly Bears in Red Dead Redemption are some of the most beautiful yet dangerous animals in the game. They can be seen in many of the videos and screenshots;1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
But what about Black Bears?

~ Coyotes ~
In the Gameplay Series: Introduction video at 0:47 Marston is attacked by a pack of coyotes. Also you can see a closeup view of one in this screenshot.

~ Wolves ~
Wolves are bigger and badder then the pesky coyotes and can be seen in the Life in the West Video at 1:51 chasing Marston on horseback.
NEW Screenshots of Wolves; screenshot 1, screenshot 2, screenshot 3, screenshot 4.If you want wolves it's safe to say go to the Tall Trees section of West Elizabeth.
*They've been mentioned to be one of the nocturnal animals who prowl around hunting prey at night often.
New Screen of wolf pack chasing a bear; Here

~ Cougars/Mountain Lions ~
The carnivorous solitary hunting cougars can be seen in many videos of Red Dead Redemption. The Life in the West Video around 1:50 among other videos show these dangerous predators that stalk the forests ,deserts, and mountain sides.

~ Bobcats ~
Bobcats, a smaller wildcat then cougars are also in the game. I found this out by pausing an inventory screen and the picture in one of the squares showed a bobcat. Click Here

~ Snakes (Diamondback Rattlesnake) ~
Yes snakes including the rattlesnake will be in the game. It's pretty much an iconic animal of the wild west. I might have found a Screenshot of one but either way theyve been mentioned in countless of articles.
*This screenshot shows a rattlesnake and it looks familiar to this screenshot.

~ Buzzards/Vultures ~
Vultures can be seen in about every video there is so far. The Life in the West video at 2:03 explains how Buzzards will appear after a bloody shootout to scavenge the remains. Shoot them for Marksmen Challenges unlocking stuff like outfits.

~ Chicken (Rooster/Hen) ~
Theres a Rooster when Marston is walking into and around a town in the Gameplay Series: Introduction Video at around 1:40 or so. Also if you look closely in the Gameplay Series: Life in the West Video starting at 1:15 theres a chicken walking out of the grass tuft. Earlier in the same video 0:48 you can see a butcher beheading a already dead chicken.
*NEW Screenshot

~ Duck ~
One can be seen in this Screenshot.

~ Crow~
Crows are indeed in the game after seeing the new Rockstar Screenshot.

~ Eagles ~
Eagles, including the American Bald Eagle, are now confirmed to be in the game. Here's the Screenshot thanks to TheUnforgiven

~ Hawks~
* There are Hawks, confirmed by watching a livestream. Here's a screenshot that shows Hawk Feathers and Owl Feathers from that livestream. It's really blurry though. Credit goes to Ambrosii Kozlov.

~ Owls~
* There are Owls, confirmed by watching a livestream. Here's a screenshot that shows Hawk Feathers and Owl Feathers from that livestream. It's really blurry though. Credit goes to Ambrosii Kozlov.

~ Birds (Pigeons & Songbirds)~
I'de imagine there being plenty of different birds in the sky. We've already confirmed the Birds of Prey to be in the game like Hawk/Eagle/Owls/Vultures so they have to have something to prey upon. Pigeons and Songbirds will surely be in the game. Blue songbirds have been mentioned in a few articles and Q&A sessions with Rockstar Devs. Maybe even the birds that like the ground and grassy plains like Roadrunners, Pheasants, Grouse, or Quail?
*The Multiplayer Freeroam Video from 0:35-0:40 shows a unknown blue bird flying, closeup screenshot, that could be a Crow but it's blue so who knows for sure.

~ Bats ~
You can see Bat Wings as a sellable item in this screenshot as well as Rockstar's Official Screenshot.
*Probably one of the nocturnal animals.

~ Bighorn Rams/Sheep ~
The Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep can be confirmed to be in the game because in The Life in the West Trailer at 1:58 there is an inventory (screenshot) that shows Bighorn Meat, Horn, and Skin as sellable items.
I'm going to love watching this play out in the game.

~ Goats ~
Goats haven't been shown in any Gameplay Series trailer yet but in one of Rockstars Weazel News episodes they showed a desert cave region with a goat walking around and that was later confirmed to be from Red Dead Redemption.

~ Pigs/Wild Boars ~
The Wild Boars can be seen in the Life in the West Video around 1:46 and also in the Gameplay Series: Multiplayer Free Roam video. This screenshot shows some slaughtered pigs in the backround.

~ Rabbits/Hares/Jackrabbits ~
Twice in the Gameplay Series: Introduction video you can spot a Jackrabbit. Starting at 2:30 on the hill in the upper right of the video you see one scamper out and once again at 3:42 on the trail a few feet infront Marstons horse you can see a Jackrabbit hopping about then turn left. They will probably be one of the more common creatures you come across.

~ Armadillo ~
The Armadillo a common creature to Nuevo Paraiso (Mexico) was mentioned early on in this article.
Quote:
Birds, armadillos, bears and wild horses were all seen in my brief demonstration.
Now we've got a confirmation screenshot thanks to TheUnforgiven who got the game early.
I also found this video on youtube (don't know how long it will be up for though)

~ Beavers ~
Well to my knowledge it was commonplace to trap Beavers not shoot them but what does Mr. Marston care. In the Gameplay Series: Life in the West Video ( 1:58 ) you can see in the inventory Beaver Meat and Fur as sellable items, here's the screenshot . Also in the Gameplay Series: Introduction Video ( 1:19 ) it shows a Beaver Fur on a circle stretcher.

~ Raccoon ~
Raccoon pelts in this screenshot.
*Probably one of the nocturnal animals.

~ Skunk ~
This article talks about skunks being in the game.
Quote:
While trying to shoot a skunk, I learned accidentally that you can aim your gun at the horse you're riding. That's all I'll say about that.
This screenshot you can see a skunk skin hanging on the right of the building.

~ Fox ~
Gray Foxes or Red Foxes live around the world in many diverse habitats including forests, grasslands, mountains, and deserts.
This could explain what this skin from the Gameplay Series: Introduction Video at 1:19 is then, Gray Fox? Also in this screenshot the two animals below Armadillo look a lot like foxes to me. Yeah they could be Coyotes but the way their bodies look and bend looks exactly like foxes to me. The tails... etc
A forum member who has the game already confirmed he shot and killed a fox.

~ Dog (domestic and/or wild) ~
We see a few dogs in various videos. Once in the "My Name is John Marston" trailer (1:27) and in the "Gameplay intro" video at (2:42) and we see what looks to be a stray or wild dog earlier if you quickly pause it at (1:14)

~ Cat (domestic) ~
NON CONFIRMED: No footage of them found yet but I find it likely cats will be in the game.
EDIT: I use to think this screenshot was a cat but after plenty of comments I think it's just a very catty looking dog.

~ Badger ~
NON CONFIRMED: The Expert Hunter Outfit shows Badger on his head, might be in the game.

~ Moose ~
NON CONFIRMED: This is a bit speculative yet because a full or alive Moose hasn't been seen in any video yet. Plus the area they're known to live in is more northern like Canada not the southern desert regions but it's worth noting Elk have a similiar range and they are in the game so... That leads me to believe they could be in the game in West Elizabeth. The northern region.
In the Official Referendum Outfits Video and the new Gamestop Commercial in the last clip of Marston walking away you can see on a building to his right a pair of Moose Antlers. Moose, the largest species in the deer family, are distinguished by the palmate antlers of the males; other members of the family have antlers with a "twig-like" configuration.

~ Pronghorn ~
NON CONFIRMED: Both male and female Pronghorns have characteristic two-pointed horns. We've seen plenty of horns on saloon walls and outside buildings in the gameplay trailers but unless I missed it, I don't think I've seen any Pronghorns antlers. Still their habitat is a perfect match for that of the game and I'de find it hard to believe this animal wouldn't be included in the game. They could make for some interesting 'predator and prey relationship' scenerios, seeing as how the fleet-footed pronghorns are among the speediest animals in the world (2nd fastest land animal only behind the Cheetah). They can run at more than 53 miles an hour, leaving pursuing coyotes and bobcats in the dust. That would be cool to see.

Also I think small desert Mice, Squirrels, and other such rodents might be in the game
As well as insects and arachnids like scorpions potentially crawling about the desert ground.
