When the game was announced to launch on the backward compatibility program, everyone’s first question was how it would perform on the new console. After all, games such as Red Dead Redemption and Call of Duty 2 have seen a noticeable boost to their performance when running on Xbox One.
Now, Digital Foundry has answered that question with the release of a performance comparison, testing the game against the previous version to see how much of a difference playing on the Xbox One makes.
As you can see in the video, the game manages to maintain a much smoother frame rate when running on Xbox One, rarely dipping below 60 frames per second. The occasional issue can still be found here and there, with a couple instances of stuttering and slow-down found in the more graphically intensive campaign, but the experience is overall greatly improved, as evidenced by the side by side comparisons with the game running on Xbox 360. The game’s multiplayer and Zombies survival mode also benefit from the 60fps with only slight dips in the Zombies mode during explosions.
Digital Foundry’s conclusion is that the performance enhancements—with a particular nod to the frame rate—make this the best console version of Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the market.
