The multiplayer information was cultivated by YouTuber BattlefrontUpdates, who posted audio from the behind-closed-doors Q&A with design director Dennis Brannvall. For a more comprehensive breakdown of the multiplayer details, reliable Battlefield YouTuber Westie covers the relevant points made in the Q&A with his own video. Some of the information affirms what the community already knew, but other points shed new light on previously unknown details with some new concept art also thrown in.
- Pick-ups: Pick-ups will return in Star Wars Battlefront II for the specialty weapons, but the game’s vehicles and hero classes will no longer be found around the map. Instead, hero classes will be equipped as part of the player loadout, while vehicles will be accessed through the spawn, similar to how the Battlefield series does it. Unlike Battlefield, however, players won’t be able to exit vehicles once they spawn in them.
- Heroes: Some notable changes are coming to the Hero system in Star Wars Battlefront II. While it was already known that heroes wouldn’t be quite the powerhouses they were in the previous game, other changes include better animations for heroes when they take damage to avoid annoying lock-ups and a rock-paper-scissors balancing style between the Heroes that allows them to counter each other.
- Weapons: Aiming down sights will be made more rewarding than hip-firing in terms of accuracy, and changes to the game’s weapon design will make blasters easier to use but harder to master. These changes are intended to value skill in the core gunplay more than it was in the previous game. Weapon customization will also be advanced, presumably through attachments and other augmentations.
- Teamwork: Star Wars Battlefront II will do away with any squad or partner system, but there will be some format in place to incentive teamwork which the developer will talk about at a later date.
- Destruction: Branvall confirmed that Star Wars Battlefront II would not feature destruction to the level of DICE’s popular Battlefield series, but some mild destruction elements will supposedly be present in the experience.
- Progression: The multiplayer’s trooper characters, hero characters, and vehicles will all be upgraded individually, allowing players to progress and unlock content for their preferred playstyle. This progression will reap more than just tools for gameplay, as the sequel will reportedly feature a wide breadth of customization options, although exact details are still under wraps.
- Cross-era Gameplay: We have known since the single-player reveal that the multiplayer would pull content from all three Star Wars eras. Immediately, fans wanted to know if content would be restricted to its respective era, or if any tool or character could be enjoyed in any setting. Branvall claimed that this was one of the hardest decisions for the developer, but the studio is not yet ready to divulge its conclusion.
- Other: Some fan-favorite gadgets will be making a return in the sequel, including the thermal imploder and the jetpack, however the jetpack will be restricted to particular classes.
Fans should expect Star Wars Battlefront II‘s full multiplayer reveal—including gameplay—to drop at this year’s EA Play event during the week of E3 2017.
