PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Introducing Paid Cosmetics Next Month

4.5
Since its debut back in March on Early Access, the phenomenon PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has lit up the Steam charts thanks to its addicting survival gameplay experience, with the title to begin introducing paid cosmetic items next month.

Developer Brendan Greene (aka “PlayerUnknown”) announced in a Steam Community forum that new paid cosmetic items will be introduced to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds to coincide with the game’s next monthly update that will arrive on August 3rd (which was delayed due to “complications with a client crash bug last week”).

Specifically, the cosmetic items will be introduced alongside an invitational for the title happening at this year’s Gamescom 2017, with the items to be provided through varying loot crates. The first two crates, titled the “Survivor” and “Wanderer” crates, will each be “free to open” and contain a special skin. The third crate, titled the “Gamescom Invitational” crate, will feature other skins that players can unlock by purchasing an unlock key for $2.50 each. The Gamescom crate will only be available for a limited time, from August 3rd – 27th, 2017.

Proceeds from purchasing the keys will be used towards funding the invitational events, contributing towards the prize pools for winners, and to support a variety of select charities during the events, which will run during Gamescom. The cosmetics themselves will include various new pieces of clothing, many of which are inspired by the cult classic film Battle Royale (from which the game itself takes a large amount of inspiration).

Greene explained that a “full system” for character customization is planned once the game exits Early Access, the new cosmetics should give a taste of what to expect in the meantime, as the “basic key and crate” system seems like something that will makes its way (in some shape or another) into the final game.

In addition to the cosmetic items, the game’s next monthly update will also include some added features, including an FOV slider for the game’s first-person view, first-person only server options for Solo and Duo games in North America and Europe, and a new rifle that will be added to the game.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now through Steam Early Access on PC, and an Xbox One version of the title is also currently in development. In the meantime, you can also check out screenshots of the game’s upcoming cosmetic items below:

These better just stay as cosmetics and not slowly turn into p2w weapons.

This is neat as long as it stays to attire and not p2w because that's when I lose interest.

SimpPosted:

Hopefully it stays as cosmetics and doesn't change like COD where you have these OP weapons in supply drops.

If it's truly only cosmetics then I'm not bothered. Hopefully they don't add in paid weapons

SakonPosted:

I don't mind this to much as its just "cosmetics " when they start adding insane guns & items then ill care.

I support microtransactions in games as long as they are only cosmetic. I think its a great idea. However i do not support them in early acess games. If a company wants micro transactions they should wait till full release.

I hate microtransactions.
