The newest installment in the Assassin’s Creed series lets players explore historic Egypt, a fresh, new location that’s untapped by the games so far. In an interview between OPM and Ashraf Ismail, the creative director for Assassin’s Creed Origins, the director confirmed that the potential for exploration was quite present in the new game as players complete puzzles and other scenarios to go deeper into ancient tombs.
"We have quite a few tombs in the game, and they range from being classical puzzles to navigation puzzles and navigation challenges,” Ismail said during the interview. “A lot of them are actually built off of the actual true tombs that we’ve researched."
When prepping for the massive desert environment that Origins will take place in, the team behind the game worked with historians who knew the environment well in order to maintain accuracy and create a feeling of exploration and depth for those who plan on traversing Egypt.
“So we put a lot of effort into recreating these tombs,” Ismail added. “Everything that is actually known we’ve mapped it out, we have images, we have research that’s been done on tombs, we actually try to replicate it as close as possible. So for example, the Greek pyramid, all the chambers, all the corridors are an authentic representation. Now, of course, we have a bit of fun and go a bit further, like, what are the secret chambers that have not been discovered yet?”
The upcoming title isn’t the first game in the series to preserve the realism of its setting – more than one of the previous titles has looked to maintain accuracy in the way that locations are portrayed, so it’s refreshing to see that the new game will follow a similar plan despite other changes that are being made.
