Report: Steam Demanding Removal of Sexual Content from Games

4.1
Multiple game developers have been tweeting about warnings received from Valve about the content included in their games distributed on Steam.

Apparently, the company behind the popular digital download platform is cracking down on quasi-sexual content, threatening the developers involved of removal if the games are not censored before the deadline.

So far, we have seen this kind of report only from developers working on visual novels or games with a markedly anime-ish art style. Below you can read a few examples from Huniepop developer Huniepot and Tropical Liquor developer Neko Works.

Mutiny!! developer Lupiesoft provided a more extensive comment on the situation, that you can see below in its entirety. They also maintain that their game does respect Steam’s guidelines.

The situation appears to be certainly odd, especially considering that games like Huniepop are already censored exactly to comply with Steam’s guidelines, and their sexual content can only be restored via external patches.

It’s also relevant to mention that there are plenty of games that don’t involve this kind of art style but include plenty of sexual content and nudity, like The Witcher series, or Conan Exiles. At the moment there are no reports from their developers about having received similar notices, even if this does not necessarily mean that they didn’t.

lolohnoeszsz Such deluded people. Steam isn't removing the games cause "wowie we hate anime tiddys lol" these games literally have pornographic material in them. All these types of games have little "free" patches to unhide this which yes violates tos. It would be like me uploading porn to youtube but just censoring it. It's still porn and it's still against tos.

Also they blame other games for more sexual content when most AAA titles with sexual content are very tame. I think there's a big difference between some nudity and what these games offer which is actual porn hidden away in the game.

I agree with your wording. But I don't agree with this in itself. The world is very sexual these days, and people are for some reason trying to fight that. I don't understand it.

Oh well. Way over my head in decision making.

So what you're basically saying is that Conan Exiles or The Witcher don't have pornographic content either? Those two games are very high in the market purchase list. How come they aren't reprimanded for it?

I'm totally agreeing with you on that. I think they SHOULDN'T be in trouble. Any game. As long as they rated M, it needs to come down to the parents.

I can go search 'Hentai' and get stuff 100x worse than what you'll find on Steam. Nothing on Steam, that I know, is actual pornographic material. Not in the sense of penetration, at least? Find me a game that is like that, not rated M, and that game needs to be taken down.

Otherwise, lets the pervs play what they want. If they pay $30 to jack off to a game when there is free porn with literally no age verification system in place..Let them.

People will find a way to get what they want :)

XeCookie_ I am not a PC gamer nor do I play any of these games so I have no part in this but personally I believe if a game has too much pornographic content there should be no issue if it is rater M otherwise then yes they should be getting warned like this.

Problem with Steam, is it's all digital. I honestly think Valve is even doing this simply because of the ages on Steam and because of PayPal's crackdown on stuff like which I think started because of people using PayPal for Patreon with general NSFW stuff. People can have very suggestive artwork on their profile, sometimes even straight porn and get away with it, until a mass amount of reports. Some users even get away with racist and "edgy" artwork or descriptions in their bio, until again, mass reports. Steam doesn't have a problem with more mature games, I mean Postal 2 is on there which was banned in a few countries. I mention I believe it has to do with the ages on Steam, is because for consoles, most of the time, the kid needs their parents to buy it for them in a physical copy at the store, where at that point, it's the parent allowing them to play [x] game. Steam it's all digital, so a kid just needs a card, lie about their birthday and they're good to go. Even when developers put in a game that abides by Steam's guidelines, some of those games were created before they were on Steam and can easily be merged with the original to make it like a straight hentai game. Huniepop for example has been on Steam for a few years, don't think they've ever been hit with something like this, but if you go on the Community Page for HuniePop, go to guides there is one showing you how to get the adult version of it, that is uncensored. Plenty of VN games on Steam have a workaround, be that from the dev themselves or people in the community applying a patch from the original off site. So at that point I don't feel that's the devs fault if a kid or whatever goes through the effort to get the 18+ patch, but whatever. Here's the thing that confused me though. All those games have to go through Greenlight (whatever it's name is now) reviewed by someone at Valve, if there needs to be changes, the devs are notified, after that reviewed again, then it's published and on the store to be bought. So I personally see it odd games like this are being tackled now, when they went through the process originally and was approved -- my only conclusion is because of younger are people are lying about their age and applying an 18+ patch to play porn on Steam and/or Steam is taking heavy pressure from PayPal now with relations to the whole incident regarding Patreon and people using their PayPal to essentially pay for porn be it games, actual porn or just 'cosplay' or whatever.

This seems pretty weird. Obviously very complicated but I have no opinion on it...

Those games aren't centered around explicit content like the anime novels are. I mean what you do a few sex scenes in The Witcher 3 and rarely ever see them again. Meanwhile in these novel games it's just porn throughout as that is its main focus.

People actually brought those games up on Reddit. No one was able to give an exact answer for that, but over onto the anime type games, it seemed it was games that had sexual content in it, that could be bypassed and made fully explicit. Games like Huniepop there are the 18+ patches. Deep Space Waifu was another one people brought up that you literally needed to change a word in the text document and it became the 18+ version. Haven't played anything by Lupiesoft so not sure if there is anything like an 18+ patch or workaround that may make them targeted, but from the few Reddit posts I was looking at yesterday, it seemed to really be based around if there is any sort of way to get the game to be 18+ in the form of sexual content.
