Speaking to GameSpot, Bethesda’s Pete Hines first revealed that mods would only run on private servers. Don’t expect to see public servers running them anytime soon after launch.
“Mod support is going to be tied to work that we’re also doing on private servers, and letting people do private servers. Mods will be a thing that run on private servers,” said Hines.
“I don’t foresee a universe in which we allow players to come in [to Fallout 76’s public servers] with their own unique and different mods. If you want to run mods, they’ll have to be done on a private server. You’ll be deciding what sort of mods you’re including and running, and everyone playing on that server is playing with those mods.”
The real kicker is that mods may take as long as November 2019 to arrive. “It’s going to be a lot of work. But mods and private servers are definitely coming.” Skyrim players didn’t have to wait very long for mod support while Fallout 4 admittedly took six months for the same. The real question now is how long Xbox One and PS4 players will have to wait to use mods in Fallout 76.
Fallout 76 releases on November 14th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Those who pre-order can access the beta (which contains the full game) on October 23rd for Xbox One and October 30th for PS4 and PC.
