While it was first revealed back at E3 2016, Death Stranding has continued to among one of the most anticipated games of the generation despite the air of mystery that continues to surround it. However, the mastermind behind the game, Hideo Kojima, shared a few intriguing details on the long-anticipated project at the annual Tribeca Film Festival that might bring as many questions as they do answers.
During the Tribeca Film Festival 2019 in New York City, Hideo Kojima shared the stage with Norman Reedus and moderator Geoff Keighley to share a few insights into the creative process behind the highly-anticipated Death Stranding. While no new footage or anything from the game itself was shown during the event, Kojima detailed that one of the major themes of Death Stranding is the idea of “connection” between players, which is a theme that has been expressed previously in regard to what the actual gameplay will be like in the title.
Specifically, one of the biggest details that Kojima shared is that although Death Stranding will be an open-world action game, he explained that “it’s really something new” in comparison to what we typically see from the genre. A large part of that will come from how players will essentially be trying to “reconnect” with the world (and other players) around them, despite the moments of solitude that you will find while exploring.
Kojima also explained that while he wants players to “play and enjoy the story” of Death Stranding, in particular he is focused on having players “look at the real world and see how it’s close or different,” with Kojima comparing some of the themes of the game to human rights events and crises taking place in Europe.
Death Stranding is currently in development for PS4, though no release window or date has been shared for the game at this time.
.@WWWBigBaldHead says that working with @Kojima_Hideo is a lot like working with @RealGDT. “You want to get inside his head,” says Reedus. “You want to see everything. It’s super fascinating.” Reedus notes Kojima’s approach is incredibly collaborative, organic, and open to ideas. pic.twitter.com/BWDYolcJWq

“Everything he does is 1000% honest... You can’t fake that honesty. You can’t computer-generate honesty,” says @WWWBigBaldHead about @Kojima_Hideo. Kojima’s honesty is both emotional and practical: he updated DEATH STRANDING to include a new tattoo that Redus got during filming. pic.twitter.com/IieoFq5ZyQ
