There is still hope to see Nintendo 64 and GameCube games on Nintendo Switch.

Arguably the biggest critique of Nintendo’s online service, known as Nintendo Switch Online, is that the service only gives players a catalog of NES games to play. While Nintendo makes fairly consistent updates in games to play, players have been hoping for Nintendo to add games from other platforms to the program. Luckily, it seems that Nintendo is still open to the idea of bringing their old catalog of games to Nintendo Switch Online.

At Nintendo’s annual shareholder meeting, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa was asked if there is any chance for games from Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo 64 to hit the online service. He said the following:

“At this place we cannot tell new information about future classic hardware among others, but we are thinking about providing an extension of the online service which is currently providing Famicom [NES] software, as well as other methods of providing them. We also recognize that there are opinions wanting to play past titles.”

While this does not confirm anything, it is comforting to know that Nintendo is aware of players love for their past games and wanting to play them.

On top of allowing gamers to play a catalog of NES games on their Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Online service also allows players to play games online similar to Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus. Along with the subscription, you can download the hit battle royale game Tetris 99 for free which has been consistently having online tournaments.

Since the launch of the service in September of 2018 there have been at least 9.8 million subscribers as of late April, with more likely having joined since then. You can purchase the Nintendo Switch Online for a variety of prices with a baseline annual subscription costing $19.99.
