EA is set to launch EA Access, its subscription program that is currently only available on PS4 and Xbox One on Steam next year starting in spring 2020. EA Access contains a backlog of the publisher’s titles to play and retails for $29.99 for a full year. However, the subscription service isn’t all that’s headed to Steam.
EA will also be releasing its games individually on Steam as well, starting as early as next month with the launch of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This will be the first time that an EA published title has been made available to purchase outside of EA Origin in years. As of today, Fallen Order is available to pre-order over on Steam as well.
“This is the start of an exciting partnership with Valve that will see us innovating for PC players around the world,” stated EA CEO Andrew Wilson of the new move. Valve president Gabe Newell also chimed in on the new partnership saying, “This is a good day for gamers. We’re excited to partner with EA to not only bring their great games and subscription service to Steam, but also to open up our communities to each other in an unprecedented way that will benefit players and developers around the world.”
In the future, EA says that you can expect to see other titles such as The Sims 4, Apex Legends, FIFA 20, and Battlefield 5 also start to make their way to Steam. Regardless of where you might play multiplayer games, whether it be through Steam or Origin, EA says that players on either platform will still be able to play together.
In an age where the PC gaming community is starting to feel more segmented than it perhaps ever has before, this is one move that seems like a net positive for those who primarily play on PC. Hopefully, we’ll start to see more moves like this made by other publishers in the future.
