Samsung says it sold nearly half a million Galaxy Fold units

4.2
As Samsung prepares to launch its second foldable handset next month, the company's IT & Mobile Communication division's CEO Koh Dong-Jin has revealed that it sold almost half a million Galaxy Fold units worldwide since its launch.

As Yonhap reports, CEO DJ Koh told reporters at CES 2020 that "I think we've sold 400,000 to 500,000 Galaxy Fold smartphones."

The number is notably lower than 1 million units that was erroneously stated by Samsung Electronics' President Young Sohn at an event last month. Nonetheless, the Galaxy Fold retails for upwards of $2,000 in most markets of the world and so selling almost half a million units of the device is no small feat. The device is clearly not yet ready for mainstream consumers due to various reliability issues with its design.

Samsung had announced the Galaxy Fold at MWC 2019 in February and it was due to launch in April. However, major reliability issues were discovered with the device about a week before its launch which led Samsung to delay the release indefinitely. The Galaxy Fold was then finally released in September in selected markets and in limited quantities with a tweaked design.

Samsung is now working on its second foldable device featuring a clamshell design like the foldable Moto Razr. The device has already leaked in pictures and it is expected to be announced alongside the Galaxy S11 at Samsung's Unpacked event next month.

Zema im surprised they sold this many I saw alot of bad reviews on youtube when this food first came out

When it first came out it was not ready. Samsung took full responsibility and fixed there design and provides their best support team for free with the purchase. After they fixed the design theres no problems with it. Most reviews now are very positive about it.

Maze The idea is cool but it just doesn't look good in my opinion..but i've also never seen it in person, sure seems like a high amount of sales for never seeing someone have it in person tbh

The phone is definitely more for enthusiasts. Seeing it in person might change your mind you could check best buy. My local one had it on display.

TTG I like the concept but the price and the flaws it has makes it not worth it. Just having to many issues with something people rely on.

Think about it this way, you're buying a package in a sense. $2000 for the phone, wireless earbuds that are decent, a case, a charger, and it comes with a free warranty. Now compare this to the people that buy top of the line iPhones. 11 Pro Max is $1500, airpods are $250, chargers and case and everything else it adds right up to $2000 in the end. There's not really any flaws after Samsung fixed the problems.

Overall I believe that if Samsung had the updated design in the beginning, there would be millions of sales. Again this phone is for enthusiasts but so is the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Tons of people will pay the little bit of extra cash to have the latest and the greatest when it comes to smartphones.
