Kojima wants to expand into anime, manga and movies

Games industry veteran Hideo Kojima is interested in developing more projects outside of video games.

Which probably isn’t a big surprise to anyone who has played his heavily film-inspired, cinematic games. Speaking in the February edition of Famitsu (as translated by DualShockers), Kojima and character artist Yiji Shinkawa described what projects they would like to do following the release of Death Stranding.

Both say they would like to work on a manga together, with artist Shinkawa stating he would like to work on an analog project that he can touch directly. In the interview Kojima also says that he would like to make a movie featuring Shinkawa’s designs, adding that he hopes to make something like an anime so that Shinkawa has the chance to create some mecha designs.

Kojima Productions is working on multiple game projects, according to Kojima. One of these being a “big” game – although what that is exactly has yet to be revealed. The game developer also hopes to work on smaller episodic titles and digital-only games, he says.

This isn’t the first time Kojima made his filmmaking plans known. Last November he confirmed to BBC that Kojima Productions will be venturing into film.

“In the future, Kojima Productions will also start making films,” Kojima said in the documentary. “If a person can do one thing well, then they should be able to do anything well.”

“I think within the next few years, gaming will move on to streaming. Movies, dramas, and games will all be streamed, and you’ll enjoy them on your iPad or iPhone or a screen anytime, anywhere. When that happens, games, films, and dramas will have to compete in the same space. I’m very interested in the new format of game that will appear on there, and that’s what I want to take on.”
