Sony announced the new PlayStation Studios brand opening, which will be used for first-party PlayStation games moving forward.
This new branding will be utilized when the PS5 launches later this year. Below, you can see how each of Sony’s exclusives will begin with the PlayStation Studios opening animation. This will only be used in games developed and managed by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios. In a quote from gamesindustry.biz, Eric Lampel, senior vice president and head of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, gives some details on what games we can expect to see this new opening in.
“If our studios are managing the production of these games and working with an external developer, it will still come out under the PlayStation Studios brand,” says Lampel. “It doesn’t mean that we outright own the developer, but it just means we brought it up as a first-party. In a lot of cases we don’t own the developer.”
As seen in the opening, many of Sony’s popular first-party games are showcased. This includes Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Ratchet & Clank, God of War, Little Big Planet, and The Last of Us. It ends showing the familiar button symbols, and then the official PlayStation Studios logo. It definitely has some Marvel Cinematic Universe vibes, which is pretty cool. Lampel actually comments on its similarities to the MCU opening.
“What we really wanted to do was create a way to bring the consumer into the world,” says Lampel. “When they play our games that’s the nice robust piece that happens, and then you’re transported into an adventure with rich worlds, old characters, and really captivating stories. We’re all huge Marvel fans. One of our biggest games of all time has a Marvel character in it with Spider-Man. But this is really about doing something specific for our games and our industry.”
Future PS4 games will also feature the new opening. However, it was not ready for The Last of Us: Part II, Ghosts of Tsushima, and Horizon: Zero Dawn for PC’s respective launches, so don’t expect to see it there.
