Over on Reddit, one user has shared new information on the upcoming Call of Duty game which apparently is going to go by the name Call of Duty: Classified or potentially Call of Duty: Black Ops. Naturally fans should take the following leaked information with a grain of salt as much of these details have not been verified and simply passed along from a source that is involved primarily with screenwriting for film and TV.
As fans have heard in prior leaks, Call of Duty: Classified isn't going to be a completely new game in the long running franchise. Instead, Treyarch is aiming for the game to be a soft reboot of the first Black Ops game similar to how Infinity Ward rebooted Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare with its 2019 release. The information further states that the story has gone under multiple rewrites, which is consistent with previous reports that the game had troubled development.
Originally based on a story called Fog of War that Sledgehammer Games originally came up with, the new direction brings back fan favorite characters like Frank Woods, Jason Hudson, and Alex Mason, though they won't be playable. Players will be attempting to uncover covert Soviet operations which include human experimentation during the Vietnam War era with a few other Cold War locations thrown in.
In addition, the story won't shy away from visceral moments in order to keep things grounded. This include scenes of torture, gore, and more. The game will also feature references to major moments during this era including the Kennedy Assassination, the Cuban situation and Operation Northwoods, as well as Project MKULTRA, a program of experimentation done on human test subjects which include things like mind control.
Even though Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has continued to be a major boon for Activision, it's unlikely that the company will move away from its annual release cycle for its biggest franchise. With an expected release sometime in October, fans should be expecting to hear more information on Activision's end of 2020 plans for Call of Duty soon, especially with a number of reveal streams and events planned over the next few weeks and months.
