In a new development roadmap from its developers, Risk of Rain 2 is planned to exit Early Access on consoles and PC by fall 2020.

As the long awaited follow-up to the original cult classic, Risk of Rain 2 took some notable departures from its predecessor by bringing the series’ gameplay over to a 3D setting from 2D. Since the game launched last year, developer Hopoo Games has been implementing a number of new features and building on the foundation of its roguelike sequel, with the studio revealing what’s in store for players later this year.

Developer Hopoo Games detailed its development roadmap for Risk of Rain 2 this year, including its planned launch on consoles and PC. According to the studio, the game is currently expected to exit its Early Access state in August 2020 for PC players, followed by its console launch on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in the fall. According to Hopoo, the studio wanted to make sure that Risk of Rain 2‘s launch iteration was “truly a complete game experience” not only in terms of its content, but “improving and iterating on old features and content that’s been left behind.”

While the game’s launch was targeted for earlier this year, the studio confirmed that it will be taking a little more time with the 1.0 release of Risk of Rain 2 for additional development polish. However, Hopoo Games clarified that the delay in exiting Early Access has “not been altered because of COVID-19,” and that the studio’s operations are “mostly unaffected” by the ongoing pandemic.



In addition to the confirmation of the game’s launch schedule, Hopoo Games also detailed some of the additional features that the studio has planned for the 1.0 release of Risk of Rain 2. One of the biggest new features outlined is the addition of a new server browser to allow players to join matches with other players of their own preference, along with support for dedicated servers for players to host either public or private matches. The 1.0 release of the game will also provide some major new content updates, including a new survivor, new final stage and boss, new items and equipment, and more.

Hopoo Games noted that at the moment, the studio is still moving ahead as planned with a new update for the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game this June. According to the studio, the upcoming console update will offer some of the most recent new additions to the PC version of the game, including a new stage and boss, items/equipment, and the introduction of Artifacts 2.0.

Risk of Rain 2 is available now in Early Access on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with its launch on all platforms currently expected later this year.
