PS5 and Xbox Series X’s Reduced Load Times Will Open Doors - Ed Boon

4.5
Developers across the industry have come forward to talk about the potential of the more powerful hardware of PS5 and Xbox Series X and what they might enable games to do going forward, but the one aspect that’s been spoken about more than most others is the inclusion of a solid state drive in both consoles. Among other things, these SSDs promise to greatly reduce load times in games, and one developer in particular who’s quite excited about that is Ed Boon, series creator and director of Mortal Kombat.

Speaking in a stream with Geoff Keighley for the Summer Game Fest (which you can view below), Boon said that while many people are focused on how much visuals will improve in games with the upcoming consoles, the thing that he’s more excited about is reduced loading times in next-gen games, which Boon says will allow developers to pull off things that haven’t been possible in games up until now.

“It’s funny when these new consoles come out and everybody goes ‘ok what do the graphics look like?'” he said (transcribed by Twinfinite). “I think people are underestimating the impact that the almost zero loading time is going to have.

“That’s suddenly going to open doors that weren’t considered possible before and I think we haven’t even scratched the surface of what will eventually be done with those systems.”

With the PS5 and Xbox Series X both in line for incoming events that will show off some of their games, we’re hoping we’ll come to see the effects that their more powerful hardware has had on development sooner rather than later. With so many developers in the industry excited about it potential, it’s clear that there’s certainly quite a lot of stuff to look forward to.

JoeI It will be good to see how quick the actually are

I am hoping at the minimum load times are chopped in half.

Gossip They keep saying no loading screens basically and that's something I can't wait for but I don't believe it.

I think it will happen one day, just not anytime soon.

THQ Maybe I just don't see the true potential of it. Only game I've played with long loading times is GTA but I bear with it. I'm curious as to how this will be because in online games it still takes a while to get the networks loaded in

Just a few that take 9 years to load off the top of my head, Apex, Destiny, Forza, Warzone (wouldn't be so bad if warm up part was removed)... Definitely a lot of games with long load times.

Hopefully load times will be completely gone one day.

It will open a lot of doors but I'm sure there will still ending up having some issues.
