Techland's long-anticipated follow-up launched only hours ago, putting into perspective just how impressive this record is. According to SteamDB, Dying Light 2 peaked at over 180,000 concurrent players on Steam and the number continues to grow every hour now as we approach the weekend.
This is well above the original Dying Light which is currently standing at just over 45,000 players, a number reached in 2015. Of course, after seven long years, things have changed significantly in the industry, with the overall number of players increasing every year.
If we compare Dying Light 2 with other more recent releases, the game still takes quite a punch, leaving behind popular titles such as Battlefield 2042, God of War, Resident Evil Village, Back 4 Blood, and many more. Hopefully, the Polish team is satisfied with such starting numbers of its ambitious endeavor, which marks a new turning point for the studio.
Dying Light 2 Stay Human currently sits at 77% positive user reviews on Steam so, despite the higher number of players, it pales in comparison when it comes to reviews. The original sits at a staggering 95% positive rating on the platform. With Techland already pledging at least five years of post-launch content support, maybe it'll climb up the ladder to compete with the first's score.
The critical reception to Dying Light 2 has also been solid, with the average score slowly rising since the first wave of reviews — Dying Light 2 is rated at 76 out of 100 on OpenCritic right now. And while it had a slightly buggy launch, the devs have already dropped a huge day one patch that eliminates over 1,000 of those bugs, improving the game substantially.
