NVIDIA DLSS3 is a new graphical technology compatible with the 40 series of NVIDIA cards that uses artificial intelligence to boost visual fidelity while maintaining consistent framerates.
Adrien Chmielarz, the studio’s creative director, had the following to say about the implications of this new technology on Witchfire’s development.
“You start the game, push all graphics options to the max. You enjoy it for a while but then, especially if it’s an action game, you realize that the framerate is king. So you start lowering the quality of visuals in order to achieve that smooth gameplay. DLSS 3 allows the seemingly impossible, high framerate without compromising the visuals. A no-brainer for a game like Witchfire, which is both action and beauty.”
The new trailer, viewable below, showcases some of Witchfire’s flowing gunplay and the types of creatures you’ll be facing off against in the game’s dark fantasy setting.
The Astronauts is a studio best known for its game The Vanishing of Ethan Carter which was released in 2014. Witchfire has been in development since the end of 2015 and was originally intended as a science-fiction survival simulator before the studio pivoted to a dark fantasy first-person shooter.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a horror narrative game, but that doesn’t mean The Astronauts doesn’t have experience in creating shooters. The studio’s founders previously worked for People Can Fly which developed Painkiller and Bulletstorm. They left following Epic’s acquisition of the studio.
Though the game was supposed to enter early access in late 2022, The Astronauts decided to re-tool the game from an arena-style world to one that is semi-open, delaying the game until 2023. According to the developers, “Witchfire is on track for a release to Early Acess this year.”
