Vampire Survivors To Receive New Engine And Expansions This Year

Developer Poncle has released a blog post to ring in 2022 and give players a sneak peek into what new content is coming to Vampire Survivors later this year. The post discusses the challenges of transitioning the game to a new engine while providing fresh details on the studio's DLC plans.

In the first part of the blog post, Poncle praised players who contributed to Vampire Survivors becoming one of the top indie games of 2022. The development team also noted that wrapping up Vampire Survivors' version 1.0 was a simple task to reach more platforms as soon as possible, as they had been working in parallel on an engine port.

Poncle also pointed out that the team hasn't had enough time to bring the PC version of the game up to a new engine. However, Vampire Survivors will get a new engine on PC to improve performance and hardware compatibility sometime in 2023.

Going into further detail, the new engine was 10 times more performing than the current one, but Poncle had no intention to focus on how realistic the game's physics become as a result of it. Following that, they started working on a new engine, which resulted in gaining as much performance as they had hoped. For the time being, they intend to continue supporting the current JavaScript version while focusing on fidelity rather than performance.

Also, a large number of actual clones with stolen code and assets started to appear through the internet, which forced Poncle to release the mobile version earlier than it was originally planned. That also prevented the team from implementing and polishing several features on mobile, such as cloud saves and save transfer between devices.

"We're still working on bug fixes for mobile, but are having trouble finding some specific devices to recreate some of the niche but worse bugs (like invisible enemies wtf) so I'm sorry it's taking longer than usual to fix them, but we're working on it and have been scouting even the dodgiest possible places to find the devices we need." Poncle shared the latest about the mobile version.

Poncle has more content packs in store to further expand the game's scope, reassuring players that the main game will be updated regularly with new content regardless of DLCs. "Please remember that DLCs will only ever add more characters/weapons/stages and that the main game will keep getting updated regularly with main game mechanics and content (think Tiny Bridge-style patches) so that no key feature will ever be gatekept by a paywall," Poncle announced.

Lastly, there is something "weird and big" coming soon to the Steam public test, which will be detailed at a later date. Vampire Survivors is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Android, iOS, and PC via Steam.

The developer doesn't want to add DLC, at least not paid DLC. Let's see how that develops...
