Since Elon Musk's takeover of the platform back in October, Twitter has been at the epicenter of many controversies, with several-hundred of the company's workforce being fired and many more walking out as the identity of the platform seemed to change overnight. Many of Twitter's decisions have been heavily criticized in recent months, with some thinking Elon Musk may even step down as Twitter CEO. The company's latest attempt at monetization is a reliable one commonly found on other social media sites, such as Reddit.
As revealed in a tweet by Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter plans to introduce over 10 different awards that can be applied to tweets. The awards will seemingly function similarly to those found on Reddit, being purchasable for the site's currency. Those who buy Twitter Awards can then apply them to their favorite tweets, highlighting them and generating real-world money for the tweet's author. Once a user reaches the minimum payout threshold of $50, they can then cash out their real-world money via the app. This comes as yet another massive change in Twitter's approach to monetization following the heavily criticized changes that saw Twitter verification become purchasable.

With Elon Musk having recently set a world record for the most money lost in history, it comes as no surprise that Twitter is introducing a new method of monetization in the form of awards. However, users of the social networking service might be surprised to learn that the feature has been in development for the better part of a year, and long before Musk's takeover of the platform. Awards seem to vary in price, with the Gold award likely being the most expensive at 5,000 Twitter Coins, a currency which will likely be introduced alongside the award system.
While Twitter's award system won't do much to help the ongoing PR issues faced by the company, with Twitter users voting for Elon Musk to step down as CEO, it offers additional incentive for content creators to continue using the platform. Being able to easily make and cash out money directly through the Twitter app will be an invaluable option for many.
