With the Switch pushing seven nowadays, many are hoping that Nintendo's follow-up on its hit hybrid console will arrive sooner rather than later. That might very well happen, seeing how one of Nintendo's Switch manufacturing partners recently confirmed a new console is in development.
The latest piece of evidence suggesting that a new Nintendo console is drawing near isn't as definitive, although it still manages to be informative in its own right. Namely, a recently emerged job listing for an embedded system developer based out of Japan advertises a temporary opening for a senior engineer that would support a "famous game company" based out of Kyoto in wrapping up work on a "next-generation console." Seeing how Nintendo is the only Kyoto-based company with a contemporary track record in console development, there's ostensibly little doubt as to who is behind this newly surfaced job ad, which was originally spotted by ResetEra user orzkare.
The biggest takeaway from the listing isn't its origin, but the fact that the job requirements mentioned in the ad include "handling post-release defects" and "adjusting requirements from customers," which possibly refers to working with some kind of focus groups. Regardless, both of those role description items imply that the console in question is inching toward release.
This implication also dovetails with an early May report that narrowed down the potential release window of Nintendo's new console, stating that the system will not launch before spring 2024 but is coming along nicely. Assuming that the Switch successor truly is around 12 to 18 months away from releasing, now would indeed be a good time for Nintendo to start planning for late-stage design tweaks informed by customer feedback, logistics around warranty fulfillment, and other items mentioned in this newly unearthed job listing.
In the meantime, while rumors of yet another version of the Switch wound down with the 2020 pandemic, they haven't gone away completely. In fact, one reliable insider recently suggested that a new Switch model might still arrive in 2023. But even if another Switch revision truly is in the works, such a system does not appear to be related to this recently spotted job listing, which makes multiple references to next-gen hardware, a label that the Switch Lite and Switch OLED do not qualify for.
