COD: Advanced Warfare pre-orders are 50% behind Ghosts, says analyst

Activision is one of the biggest video game publishers in the world thanks to a handful of gigantic properties. But as it unleashes its upcoming megahit, its most successful brand of the last 10 years looks like it’s starting to lose its sales luster.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare preorders continue to track more than 50 percent behind 2013’s Ghosts, according to Cowen and Company analyst Doug Cruetz. The industry-tracking expert notes that Advanced Warfare is tracking 80 percent behind 2012’s Black Ops II. Call of Duty game regularly generate $1 billion in revenue for Activision, but Ghosts didn’t perform as well as Black Ops II. If Advanced Warfare sells worse than Ghosts, this could signify that the franchise is on a permanent decline.

Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that a poor-performing Call of Duty is still likely going to end the year as one of the industry’s best-selling games. In a note to investors, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia says that he expects Advanced Warfare to sell 17 million copies — that’s down 15 percent from Ghosts’ 20 million copies sold.

“We believe that the preorders [for Call of Duty] need to accelerate significantly over the next few weeks,” Cruetz wrote. “Or else the evidence for meaningfully weaker performance by Advanced Warfare vs. Ghosts will, in our opinion, become too strong to rationalize.”

The Cowen analyst notes that Call of Duty’s biggest problem right now is that gamers are still busy playing Destiny. If players don’t switch that game off and start looking toward their next shooter, Advanced Warfare could get off to a sluggish start.

“Call of Duty faces a very competitive slate following its launch on Nov. 4, with Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Dragon Age all scheduled for release between the Nov. 11 and Nov. 18,” said Cruetz. “With light competition pre-release and heavy competition post-release, we think a slow start for CoD could be difficult to overcome.”

Ghosts was okay, and I have already pre-ordered this game. I hope it is better than ghosts by the least bit.

That's because Ghosts single handedly ruin the Call of Duty franchise.

Probably because CoD sucks and this game looks horrible I'm extremely disappointed in myself because I know for a fact that I'll end up buying it, and I'll hate it.

I'm guessing the Exo suits have scared a lot of people away from COD. Does it really matter though? Even if AW is a failure it will still make an insane amount of money and break all kinds of records

I don't see why this is surprising.
The genre is dying down and you can only expect that to decline further.

The entire concept is over-done.

I think the Hype over CoD isnt what it used to be so this is expected

AAmbitions6000 I am tired of this futuristic bull shiiiiit. I am sure i am not the only one and I believe this is why sales are down. People don't like this. Id love to see a remake of the older games like Cod 4, Mw2, and Waw. Basic stuff yet thats what people loved and will always love.

That's what I have been trying to say. I really do not like it.

Ramslots I know this may get hate but it's my own "Opinion", Since infity Ward got a 4 year contract, and treyarch nothing to do, they have ruined The Call Of Duty Franchise, every year Treyarch always sell out Call Of Duty, because i know that technol isn't what it used to be but come one, if you compared titanfall to Advanced Warfare i see no difference, Infity Ward have ruined they game, as they did on ghost & Advanced Warfare, but while the contract is still 3 years till treyarch get to get involved, just think of all the ideas and what visuals they will be able to come up with in the future, But unfortunately i will not be getting Advanced warfare as, i feel i will be more happy going on my xbox 360 on Black ops 2, which has out sold both.

Sledgehammer games is actually developing AW not IW.

yeah but they both dev'ed ghosts witch is terrible the last good cod was bo2 and thats not even that good but its 10x better then what we have got now and whats coming lol

Every cod after MW2 has gotten slightly worse IMO. I never even mentioned ghost because I didn't buy that pile of shit. I'd honestly prefer that they go back to the old CoD 4 days. That game was pretty basic. Simple killstreaks and nothing that was really overpowered. Again that is just my opinion others will feel differently and they have the right too

_VenoM adding features to a concept people are starting to hate does not make the concept better. Call Of Duty will die.

features are not the problem. its the every year release.

look at GTA 5. its pretty much the same game every time. but its still a desired game because ITS NOT RELEASED EVERY DAMNED YEAR.
