Bethesda confirmed today on Twitter the game doesn’t end once the main story is finished, and players can continue to level as well.
Those who have played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim are familiar with this aspect, so this news may not seem like a big deal to them; however, since this wasn’t the case with Fallout 3 or New Vegas, it’s a great bit of news.
That’s probably why fans were asking. Granted with the release of the Broken Steel DLC for Fallout 3, players could continue to play after the main story was beaten and finish off any side quests they may have left.
It was a little different with Fallout: New Vegas. Once you participated in the last battle, which we won’t spoil here for those who have not played it, that was it. All your unfinished side quests went bye-bye. This was due to having multiple endings, and it would have been almost impossible for Obsidian Entertainment to create DLC which picked up where the player left off at the end of the main storyline.
If you haven’t played New Vegas yet, just stop at the end mission, finish your side-quests and the DLC and then finish the main storyline.
Thankfully, this won’t be the case with Fallout 4.
